Hindi text clipping in player UI - looking for a Devanagari-safe font
I am localising a course to Hindi and seeing clipping in the player UI (course title and menu items). Some Devanagari diacritics and matras get cut off at the top or bottom. By this I mean the small combining marks above or below the letters.
- Different browsers shift the text slightly up or down, and with tight vertical metrics the marks get clipped either at the top or the bottom.
- Line height in some player elements seems fixed or too small, so combining marks draw outside the box.
- Slide text is fine, since slide layouts allow proper line height.
Has anyone found a screen-optimised Devanagari UI sans-serif that renders cleanly in the Storyline player without clipping above or below the baseline?
Fonts tested so far:
- Noto Sans Devanagari
- Nirmala UI
- Kohinoor Devanagari
- Arial
- Arial Unicode
- Mangal
If you have a specific font, version, and size that works reliably in the player, I would appreciate details. Tips on player settings, line height, or avoiding font substitution would also help.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Aukalen,
Thanks for taking the time to share these details and test multiple fonts. What you are seeing with Devanagari characters clipping in the Storyline player UI is consistent with how the player currently handles line height and vertical spacing.
Slide text renders correctly since those layouts allow more flexible line height, but the player interface uses fixed spacing that can cut off combining marks and diacritics.
I have shared your post with our product team as a feature request to improve how the player renders complex scripts like Devanagari. There is also a separate report about Hindi text rendering inconsistencies between Slide View and Preview, which may help inform the team’s broader review of text rendering.
I am also leaving the floor open to the community in case anyone has found a Devanagari-safe font or workflow that helps prevent clipping in the player UI.
Thanks again for flagging this! Your feedback helps us continue improving accessibility and localization in Storyline.
