Hover states don't always reset; any way to get selected state to not show hover?

I have a table with lots of buttons in a group where the user is only to select one. I've simplified my interaction to a single table with 25 buttons.

When moving the mouse, sometimes the hover states of the buttons don't return back to normal. Moving the mouse fast exacerbates the problem.

Is it possible to have the selected state trump the hover state, so that I can see the tick as the cell is clicked, not just after the mouse exits?
