How to import a SCORM file into Articulate Storyline?
Hi - I´m new to Articulate and trying to find out how to import content on SCORM format into Articulate storyline. I've received some learning material on that format and I've heard that I should be able to upload it to Articulate. Can anyone give me a step by step guide on how to do so?
Thanks in advance!

It would be powerful to be able to import a SCORM file to Storyline, be able to edit it and re-publish. A training completed by a former colleague needs to be updated. We don't have the source file but do have the SCORM package.

Being able to import an existing SCORM package (that was created in a different LMS or inherited from an employee, etc.) into Articulate so we can update its contents would be VERY useful to us, too!

Since there is not associated project file when converted to a SCORM package, you are not able to convert it from SCORM to a project to allow for updating. You will need the source files for you to be able to update, then convert to a SCORM package to load into your LMS.

We have this same issue and we came up with a couple of workarounds:
If the SCORM package is a practice or quiz style, it can be simple to recreate it into a basic Storyline project by just
- Open the SCORM package inside of an LMS or display it somehow.
- Use Storyline to record your clicks and entries as you move through the SCORM course.
- Look at the final recording and make decisions on which slides can be kept as is (probably any hotspot slides can be easily edited) or which slides need to be redone (the recording is helpful here because you can use it as a basis for the design and elements).
This is less helpful when your SCORM package has MP4s inside of it. If you record it using Storyline and all you want is for the same functionality and design BUT you want to export it as an xAPI file, then it can be helpful. But most likely, you will want to change the design. Nonetheless, to record yourself taking the SCORM course is a good starting point at least.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to Storyline and excited to learn from everyone in this community. I have a question about published files:
Is it possible to turn published Storyline web content back into a Storyline editable file?
Thanks for insights! -Amy

Hi Amy,
Welcome to the E-Learning Heroes Forum 🎉
I am happy to help with your question!
After a course is Published, it creates a file that is intended for the environment it was published for. It can't be edited or reverse-engineered. To edit a published course, you'll need to have the original Storyline project file (*.story).

Hi Vincent,
We have a lot of Published courses that we need to change from flash to html. We did not create them and the person who did has since left the firm. I am wondering if there is a way to get these files onto articulate to change to html5?

Hi team, i just got my license for Articulate and am exploring the tool. A co-worker previously created a training using Rise, the web version. This was then exported as a SCORM package and published to LMS. WHere can i find the .story file on RIse, so i can import it into Storyline and update?

Hi Girish,
Rise 360 is a web-based software where courses are edited and saved online, while Storyline 360 is downloaded to your computer, and you can save a .story file to your local drive similar to PowerPoint.
If you need to make edits to a Rise 360 course, your co-worker can send you a copy of the course using the steps outlined in the article below. I hope this helps!

Thank you Ren. This definitely helps.

It would be really helpful if the process to create the scorm file, just bundled up the story file too. Then when you want to revisit the project later (because you will), it was right there for you.

Agreed - this seems quite basic and would solve a very common issue experienced by many of us!

It would also be a great way to steal someone else's code. That is why Macromedia removed the source .FLA from published Flash SWFs many years ago, and completely changed the output format a few revisions after that.
While it is convenient to have the ability to decompile your project any time you want, having and enforcing retention policies and procedures for all assets is a small price to pay to protect intellectual property.

I don't know if anyone's still following this thread, but I wonder if someone can help? I'm a newbie and can't understand why you wouldn't be able to import a SCORM zipped folder back into Storyline or Review 360. How else would you be able to edit existing courses that have already been published to your LMS? Am I missing something?
Hello Buildbase Training!
The published output folder doesn't include the source file, so there isn't a way to edit a Storyline course without the .story file. The .story file should always be saved on your local drive, typically the C: Drive, and isn't changed when publishing a project. I'd recommend looking for the .story file and opening it in Storyline 360 to make edits.

My guess is that there is lost metadata that a published SCORM file does not contain. Much like a layered photoshop file can be easily manipulated, but once flattened into something like a .PNG, it loses the layers. My best guess is that reverse engineering a project from a SCORM file requires a great deal of inference by the import system which inevitably fails to capture the construction of the source product.

I am following this thread and am frustrated that I cannot somehow convert a Storyline scorm zipped file back into a .story file. We have instructional designers who have left the company and have taken their .story files with them. Dear Storyline developers, I wish for you to have a machine to help us with this apparent need from your subscribers. Please and thank you!

Same question here. If I get a SCORM file from a vendor and just need to add our intro slide, is that possible?
