Inconsistent Audio Volume Handling for Video Audio in Storyline
I've seen other (two year old) posts that mention this problem but haven't seen further discussion or a posted resolution.
I'm experiencing a consistent issue with how Storyline handles audio in videos compared to standalone audio files. When I import a .wav narration, it defaults to Medium volume, which I can adjust as needed. However, when I add a video with embedded audio—such as an .mp4 produced in Camtasia—Storyline doesn't apply the same volume setting, and the audio plays back at a noticeably different level.
Even though all my audio is normalized and balanced externally in Audacity before import, the difference in volume and character is obvious once in Storyline. Separating audio from video restores volume control but makes timeline and trigger management more complex.
I can't provide a sample file due to corporate policy, but the problem is easy to duplicate:
- Record a short instance of audio (Audacity, Audition, etc.)
- Export to .wav
- Import the .wav into a video editing application (Camtasia, Premiere, etc.), add visual content, and export to .mp4
- Import the video into Storyline on slide 1
- Import the .wav from Step 2 above to slide 2.
It would be very helpful if Storyline allowed video audio to use the same volume settings as standalone audio, or at least provided a similar control.
Hello GrantLewis-e420,
Thanks for reaching out!
Have you tried adjusting the quality settings of your course before publishing? How about setting the compression level of your video to "none"?
If changing the settings for media files doesn't help, try the following:
- Re-encode your videos so they use a different profile using tools like Handbrake
- Repair your Storyline 360 installation
Please open a case with our support team here if you need further assistance.

Quick follow-up: I now see that there IS a Video Volume setting that I hadn't noticed before. Both my standalone audio and videos are set to Medium, but the difference is still noticeable. Maybe it's related to encoding methods?

Ah, this is it! Setting the compression to None is what I needed. Thank you!
Awesome. Glad to hear that worked! Let us know if you need anything else!
