Layers in Storyline PLAYER - and glossary links

Hello Hero community!

Doing some research, I saw a similar topic 9 years ago & 3 years ago but since it's been a while maybe thing have changed. (and one of them was supposed to be in the pipeline)

1- Can we now make layers appear in the Storyline player as opposed to only slides?

My dictionary has a lot of links from slide letter A, layer Anagram layer Artist to slide letter B, C, D and their respective layers. It was built as an interactive tool where you can click on any letter and be brought to their pages, and then the buttons selected will lead you to that definition that is hosted on a layer. With the player, the search function is really interesting and thus being able to search for a specific term (which are hosted in my layers here) would be amazing.

2 - If not, is there a quick way to transform all layers into slides?

3- is there a risk of breakage or storyline not being able to support everything? As I would most likely keep all my links (click on rectangle A to go to letter A click on rectangle M to go to letter M + click on Anagram to go to layer anagram etc etc) on EVERY SINGLE slide, to keep that interactive-ness.

I am starting with roughly 250 definitions (22 slides + each one a handful of layers) but that would potential have to transition to 250 slides/no layer depending on the answer, and that's just the beginning..

4- Is there a way to click on an acronym in the glossary player that would take us to the corresponding slide/layer? (this was the one I read was in the pipeline)

Sorry for the lengthy one and thank you !

  • Hello Emily,

    Thanks for reaching out!

Allow me to address each of your inquiries individually.

    1. You can make individual layers appear on slides using the 'Show Layer' trigger, but you cannot call layers that belong to other slides to appear on a slide.
    2. There is no way to convert slide layers into individual slides.
    3. You can check out this article which explains the ways to minimize the risk of file corruption, which is the only thing that can cause any real damage to your project file. If your triggers are properly configured, then they should function normally within the project without any issues.
    4. The built-in glossary of Storyline 360 doesn't support any interactivity, but we have examples that you can use to design a glossary that your learners can interact with.

Let me know if you need anything else!

  • Hello Joe,

Thank you for your answer, I may not have explained my point 1 very well, I mean can we have the layers showing in the Menu in the "player" menu?

  • Hi Emily,

Thanks for clarifying. In order to make sure I fully understand your question, I wanted to confirm a few things:

    • Are you looking to achieve having the slide layers populate in the Sidebar of the course (where you find the Menu)?, or
    • Are you looking to incorporate the Glossary and Notes tab in that Sidebar?

(If so, you are able to do this by going to Player Properties and selecting which player tabs you would like selected.

At this time we only have the capability to have the Menu, Glossary, and Notes tabs within that side of the Player.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
