Link to a FTP VS link to a LMS

Hi,

I have to create a button in a page of storyline, to make learners download a pdf. I know I have to create a link to a FTP server. But, can I put the pdf in the LMS and make a link ? Does the link to a pdf in a LMS is working ? If not, why ? I have to explain that to a client... thank you!

I am not sure why you would have to put the target PDF in the LMS unless you need to associate some actionable task with that (tracking downloads, perhaps). In our organization, we simply point the link to the PDF to an internal site where all employees can access it. In the Storyline file, we then put that link directly in the file so it's available either as a Resource or as a clickable item.

So in your case (a button to allow users to download a PDF), you would create the button, copy the link to the PDF, and then paste that link into a hyperlink trigger for the button.

  • If you follow Joe's suggestion to make the pdf a Resource (which you should), then when you publish, SL will go get the pdf and package it as part of the published output. That's the last time you have to worry about it.

    Hi!

If one uses different LMS for identic copies of a course, for example:

    • One version published on a LMS (Docebo) of "ones own organisation":
"organisation A" (where members can access the course).
    • Copies of the same course published on several other clients (unknown) LMS:s:
"organisation B, C, D and so on (where employees have access to the course whithin their own organisations LMS).

Add then the need of linking to a PDF owned by organisation A showing one or several pages of text.

Question: how/where would you publish the PDF to make sure that all the different users can open the PDF?

Add the perspective of unknown firewalls, no need of tracking who downloaded the document - but a smooth/safe way for all the above to reach the document over time?

  • Hi Rikard,

Great question! I understand you'd like to know where you can include a PDF for people to download regardless of their LMS. I'd be happy to get you some information about that!

You can include downloadable PDFs in your course by adding them to the resources tab in the player. Here is an article covering everything you need about attaching resources in Storyline.

    Thanks for reaching out!
