Locked Menus for the First Try and then Unlocked after visiting

Hi

Can anyone tell me whether there is a script that I can write that allows for users to go through my course first time with  the menu locked so they have to visit each page after the first time doing the course but then afterwards when they visit the course, they are free to navigate the course freely?

Thanks

  • Hello, Everyone!  ✨

I'm happy to share that we have released a new update for Storyline 360 (v3.80.30988.0.).

In this update, we have implemented a fix for:

    • In the player menu, question bank slides weren't highlighted when selected or visited.

As a first stepI recommend updating Storyline 360 to the latest version. Here's how:

    Update Authoring Apps

If you have any questions, please let us know in this thread or privately in a support case.

    Have a great day!

Hi Natasha - welcome to Heroes!

You can apply 3 different navigation restrictions to your project via the Player.

If you click on Player, select Menu and then click on the cog icon, this will open the Menu Options window where you will find a drop down for navigation restrictions:

    • Free: Allows learners to navigate to any part of your course at any time by clicking on the titles in the menu to navigate to any part of the course at any time.
    • Restricted: Allows learners to view the current slide and any slides they've previously viewed, but not the slides they haven't yet viewed.
    • Locked: Learners can only view the slides in the order you've designed via branching. The menu becomes a guide to what slides are in your course rather than a navigation tool.

It sounds like you would want to apply the restricted setting?

  • Hi Natasha and welcome to Heroes!

In addition to what Antony shared, if you're users will be leaving the course and returning to it at a later date, you'll want to enable the prompt to Resume detailed here so that they're progress is saved.

  • Why does the Knowledge Check stay locked in the menu after it has been viewed. I have the menu set to restricted, and all other slides are open after they have been viewed. Just the Knowledge Check stays locked. Why is this?

  • Hi Laura,

Thanks for sharing your experience! I just ran a quick test and noticed some similar behavior when the quiz questions are within a question bank. Is this how your course is set up? If so, it looks like you may be running into a bug we have reported!

If not, I'd like to have our support team review your file and determine if a workaround can be found. Feel free to share it in a case, and they'll start testing as soon as possible.

      Hi Ren,

I am running into this issue with a question bank. The navigation is restricted, but even after completing the knowledge check, it remain "locked" in the menu. Is this a bug, or just how it's designed to function?

  • No question bank used. Just freeform quizzes. But, I think I figured it out. It was the menu item in the player. I had a header for the Knowledge Check, but no child under it, so when I selected the first slide of the Knowledge Check to go under the Parent header of the knowledge check it worked. If I didn't have a child under that header it wouldn't unlock.

Was a menu set up issue. Working fine now. Thanks!

  • Hi Nicole,

Sorry to hear you've run into an issue with your question bank. Thanks for providing that information on your navigation setup as well as a screenshot.

After reading your post, it sounds like you have chosen to restrict or lock the menu for all slides and the previous/next buttons for some slides. Does this sound correct? If so, you might consider using triggers to override the default setup. We’ve listed the steps out in this article.

I wanted to test this out on my end, so I have attached a sample Storyline project file where I have set up 2 questions in a Question Bank. I was able to see that the locked icon remained in the menu after completing my Question Bank questions. This is a known bug that our team is currently tracking. We’ll be sure to share any updates or news in this thread.

As a workaround, I’d like to share a modification you can make within the player settings. Within the Menu section, you’ll want to navigate to the gear shift, where you will see the question banks in your menu list. From there, you want to select the checkbox to Show Slide Draw Contents

Here is a quick Peek where I walk you through the steps.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions!
