Media Library Bug

Hello,

Media Library in Storyline 360 seems to be overwriting my existing .mp4 with new upload if it has identical properties, but it's a different file name.

for ex.

test_.mp4 is uploaded to media library, I then duplicate the source .mp4 and rename it to: test_2.mp4. I now have two files with identical properties, but two different file names. When I upload test_2.mp4, instead of uploading as it's own media, Storyline will replace test_.mp4 with test_2.mp4

Can I get some insight into what's happening here? I feel like I'm missing something.

I have a workaround to where I re-export test_2.mp4 shortened by a second so some of the file properties change, but I'd like to understand what's going on with Storyline and why it doesn't treat this file as it's own! Thanks in advance :)

  • Hi AlanaGilbert-f7,

    Happy to help!

This is the expected behavior for Storyline 360 and is related to how the Media Library manages video assets. Storyline doesn't rely on the file name to determine whether a video is new or unique. Instead, it evaluates the file's internal structure and signature.

If the two files are binary-identical, Storyline recognizes them as the same asset. As a result, Storyline treats it as the same media file and links it to the existing item in the Media Library. Rather than creating a separate entry. This can appear as though the original file is being replaced.

This behavior helps prevent unnecessary duplication inside the project, and keeps the .story file size smaller to improve performance. However, you shouldn't have to trim the runtime of the video itself. When testing, I uploaded two identical MP4s to the Media Library by adding a unique tag/comment to one of the files' properties.

Can you give that a shot and let me know how it goes?

Looking forward to hearing from you!
