Multiple shape fill with background image fails

Using Storyline, I need to create a "new" shape (not one of the default shapes) with an image that appears in that shape.

To do so, I am having the slide background appear as a cutout "in" using a number of shapes to make my final desired shape.

I have reviewed a few pasts posts, including theses:

Background shape fill issue? | Articulate - Community

Picture fill on grouped shapes | Articulate - Community

Steps I am taking -

  1. Inserting a new shape each time
  2. Moving the shape on the slide to where I want it to appear. This may include rotating or resizing the shape.
  3. Repeating step 2 multiple times.
  4. Once everything is positioned, I then format shape > slide background fill all the shapes

The result.... is that some shapes work - i.e., the image appears as expected. However, some shapes the "cutout" appears away from where I placed the final shape.

What am I doing wrong?

  • Hi ChrisWilkins423 I found the same. I had to rotate shapes after applying the background fill. Applying the fill causes a weird rotation behaviour for some reason. It looks to change the centre of rotation point in the shape, but you should be able to get the shapes in the location and rotation you need, just a bit trickier though as not rotating how you would expect. Looks like a bug to me.

  • It's worse than that as rotation skews the image around the rotation point. Any attempt to reposition doesn't work because of the skewed image. I have tried to position before filling and after filling and it still screws up. I am out of ideas except to use PS.

I would recommend reporting as a bug to Articulate. PS it will have to be.
