Option to prevent Articulate 360 updates from recreating desktop shortcut?

Hello,

Is there a setting or installation option to prevent Articulate 360 from creating a desktop shortcut during updates?

On my corporate managed Windows computer, the shortcut is recreated after an update even when I have deleted it. It (probably) appears in C:\Users\Public\Desktop, so in our corporate environment a standard user cannot remove it without administrator assistance.

I appreciate that shortcuts may be useful for some users, but I prefer to keep my desktop clear and can launch Articulate from its existing location. Could you advise whether there is a supported way to stop the shortcut from being created, or consider adding an option to disable it?

Thank you.

      Hi JudyNollet,

Thanks for jumping in, and for pointing @DebojyotiDas to the feature request form! I understand that the shortcut reappearing after updates has been an annoyance for you, too.

A couple of details from your side would help us capture your experience clearly:

      • What do you do today when the shortcut shows up again after an update?
      • What would you like to see happen instead when Articulate 360 updates?

That context helps us see how this plays out for you as you work in Articulate 360 AI.

Hi LucianaPiazza what I do today is I have to reach out to our corporate help desk, who delete the shortcut with their admin rights. For some reason the application does not create the shortcut in my local desktop, meaning I cannot delete it without elevated privileges.

What would you like to see happen instead when Articulate 360 updates?

I have seen many application have a preference button - do not create desktop shortcut. Articulate does not have that during the install or update flow - that would be great. Or simply check if there is a desktop shortcut and if not, keep it that way or prompt the user at the end of the update or installation do you want a desktop shortcut etc.

  • Hello @DebojyotiDas,

Thanks for sharing the details of your managed Windows setup! I understand that the Articulate 360 shortcut keeps coming back after each update, even after you delete it, and that you can’t remove it from the Public Desktop without administrator help.

I’d like to learn more so we can represent your experience accurately:

    • How does your IT team usually handle Articulate 360 installs and updates?
    • How does the shortcut coming back affect you or your team day to day?

That would give us a clearer picture of how this impacts your experience with Articulate 360 on a managed computer. Feel free to share anything else that comes to mind.

LucianaPiazza I don't think our IT support uses a  special deployment method or something, they just download the installer and install it normally. I do see that they need admin rights - which normal users do not have. And then the Articulate 360 automatically updates. So nothing special or out of the ordinary. But with every update Articulate creates the shortcut that I had deleted previously.

I am the sole user of Articulate in my team, so I won't be able to say if it is a common behavior.

    • Hi deb_d,

Thank you for the detailed follow-ups! I understand that your IT team installs Articulate 360 with the standard installer, which requires admin rights, and then it updates automatically. Each update recreates the desktop shortcut, and it lands somewhere you can’t delete without elevated privileges, so you contact your help desk to remove it every time. You’d like to see a “do not create desktop shortcut” preference like other apps offer, or for updates to leave it off once it’s been deleted, or to prompt you at the end of the install or update.

We appreciate you taking the time to walk us through this. We can’t promise a specific outcome, but your details help us understand what you’re experiencing. If more comes up, we’d love to hear it!
