Publish for LMS or LRS

In reading the instructions to send xAPI data to a server, I was wondering if the data can be sent only to an LMS and then how would the data be read? Three years ago I did this but I used an LRS that captured the data so I could get a report.

When I read the current documentation, I don't get an answer that is clear to me on how I would do this.

Any help is appreciated.

  • Hi Jeffrey,

Thanks so much for reaching out!

Storyline will send this quiz and survey data to your LMS when you publish the course. The information may vary based on which LMS standard you choose, but I recommend contacting your LMS provider directly to confirm which information will be reported!

If you have additional questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to help!

  • Kelly, thank you for the reply.

I have done this before but I was wondering if now we would only need an LMS to get the data in the course. It seems we still need both an LMS and LRS for reporting purposes. From the people I talk to, needing that LRS is one reason they have not adopted xAPI.

I am not sure how to turn the information in the document you referenced into a way to read the data from a course in a report from the LMS. Unfortunately, I don't have an IT department to help with this.

I do like that Storyline now supports xAPI in the software. Thanks.

      Hi Jeffrey,

      Happy to chime in!

The LMS that we use for testing (SCORM Cloud) doesn't require an LRS to generate reporting data. Opening the reporting section for each course will display the data listed in the article that my colleague Kelly shared. I believe in most cases, having just an LMS is enough, even if you are publishing your courses in xAPI format. I'd recommend reaching out to the support team of your LMS to confirm if their environment has a reporting section and whether having an LRS is necessary.

You can check out this article if you're interested in seeing what SCORM Cloud's reporting section looks like!

  • Jose,

I use SCORM Cloud for testing. but I have to admit I don't know how to get reports out of it. I have been in the LRS tab and there is a viewer that displays data, but not in a report format. I am a consultant, so I don't have my own LMS. I am using TalentLMS that does support xAPI, CMi5 etc., but I have not been able to get a report that captures some of the fields from Storyline that do have a statement.

I have written to TalentLMS for help, but they do not seem to understand what I want. I don't know what questions to ask them.

I appreciate your link to the article on SCORM Cloud's reporting. I will work with this and see what I can accomplish. I do think that if more people knew how to get reports with other data in their courses just from their LMS, they would use it more. That is the main feedback I get when I talk to people about this.

I am doing a presentation at Training 2024 in February 26 to 28 and want to have as complete information and example as possible.

    Thanks again for this information.

  • Jose, the only thing the SCORM Cloud does is report statistics about the course, but it does not show any data that is in the xAPI fields. I do see the information in xAPI/LRS tab the LRS Viewer. However, that is not a printable report.

How do I get a report of the data so I would know it is being captured? I need something that shows the field name and then the result. The final goal is to help people pull that information from their own systems to make xAPI valuable to them.
