replacing picture naming issue
I often rename my picture objects from the default 'pic' to a name that describes the picture.
If I later replace that picture, the actual file name 'xx.jpg' doesn't change to the new picture. The original picture file name is preserved although the changed picture shows.
Is there any way to avoid this besides keeping the original list of Pic 1 Pic 2 etc?

No questions -- that's exactly what I do too. It doesn't work for me unless I haven't renamed 'Picture 1' to a custom name.
I'll send in a file to support.
Thanks, Charles. I see the file you sent. One of our Engineers will take a look and get back with you shortly!
Hi David,
Thanks for reaching out and sharing that you are running into a similar issue.
I took a look at the case Charles worked with our team on and it seems that he was unable to replicate the issue in a new file.
What version of Storyline are you currently using when you are running into this issue?

Hi Leslie & David,
Since my exchange about this problem 3 months ago, I have found that if the picture I'm replacing has had effects applied like drop shadows and states, the file name won't change. If I replace a picture that has not had effects/states applied, the name changes correctly.

Hi Charles,
Thanks for jumping back into this discussion and letting us know you've come across this bug where replacing an image after the original image has been edited will not update the name in the timeline. We have reported it to our team, and continue to keep an eye on it to evaluate how many customers are impacted and what impact it has on courses.
Here's some more detail about how we tackle bugs. I'm sorry that I can't say if this issue will be fixed, but you're in the right place to stay updated on this bug's progress.

Hi! I'm also running into this issue, and it's becoming a bigger issue with larger courses I am creating.
I have been updating assets in the media library to newer versions. However, when I have made this update, it has changed every asset that I had replaced with different images to this new one! I'm guessing it's because when I replaced the image in the first place, it kept the same filename in the timeline so still thinks it's the original image and not the replaced one.Very frustrating as I'm going to have to go back and replace everything again now!

Hi Laura, I feel your frustration.
If I'm understanding you correctly, you had replaced multiple images in a project with other images from your Media Library, but the file names didn't update in the project timeline. So you ended up with a lot of images that looked correct, but they all showed the same timeline name.
When you later made edits in your media library to the file with that name, ALL the images in your project were changed to the updated image since the program hadn't updated the file names earlier.
I just tested image replacing in an older file which once had the same problem and now it works properly. I'm not sure when they fixed the original problem I described above.
Was your project made more that 5 or 6 months ago? Perhaps before they fixed the issue?
I'm not sure how you could work around your problem at this point other than reimporting importing the images into your project. A 'replacement' of the image should now change the name in the timeline and show the correct image from your Media Library.
Good luck,

Hi Charles,
Yes exactly, You have described it so much better than I did!
This is a project I started a few weeks ago so definitely not old in any way. But as you said in a previous comment, it does only seem to be on images that I have applied states or effects to, but for me and what I'm replacing - that's everything!I'm basically setting up 3 or 4 templates which use the same kind of layout (to keep navigation consistent across courses/areas), but I want different themes on each to easily distinguish what kind, of course, you are in - and so have created different colour buttons which I just want to replace out on the varying templates.
Yes, I've done a manual replacement for one of the templates, and now I'm seeing whether duplicating the projects and then swapping out the assets will help in anyway at all. It's just a little frustrating as you'd think replacing an image would actually replace it, and this isn't so much of a problem if you're just creating 1 or 2 courses, but I'm using this as a base for courses going forward and will be updating and changing this "master" template as necessary and don't want to find down the line that I've got to then reimport everything again.
Thanks for your reply!Laura

Assuming you're relatively up to date on the Storyline 360 app, picture replacement should be okay, shadows states notwithstanding.
Are your buttons bitmaps?
Thanks for letting us know that you've been affected by this issue as well, S T.
This issue is still open for investigation and I've added your additional comment as well as updated the user impact.
