Resources and URLs

I need a list of all the PDFs in a course a client has sent to us, both ones in the Resources area in the player, as well as hyperlinks in the triggers. Is there a way to create this automatically?

Also, the Media Library is a handy interface for exporting graphics, audio, and video files. Is there a way to do this with the files that are in resources? I can see the filepath of the resource file, but that's not helpful outside the computer the resource was imported from.

  • Hello Sarah,

    Happy to help!

If you publish your course and go to the \story_content\external_files folder in the published output, you'll see all of the resources of your course there. You can then switch to list view in the Explorer window to see the resources listed per line.

The Media Library doesn't interact with the resources of a course which means you'll need to manually switch out resources in the Player settings if you need to update the files.

    Hope this helps!

    Jose,

Thank you for your response. I mentioned the file was from the client. If they don't send a publish they've made themselves (which is often the case), we can't access those PDFs.

      Hi Sarah!

      Happy to jump in here!

When Resources are added to a Storyline file, they are saved within that project file (.story). To clarify, does your client typically send the course as a published Review link? Or do they send the source (.story) file itself? If they are sending the .story file, you should be able to publish it locally, yourself, and follow the steps my teammate Joe shared to retrieve the external files.

If you are receiving an error, can you please share more information on what the error message says when trying to access the PDF files? Also, it would be helpful to take a closer look at the .story file itself. Are you comfortable sharing a copy here in the discussion or privately through a support case?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Steven,

Thank you for responding. I don't believe the resources are saved in the Storyline file, because the publish I've made of a client file with resources did NOT have the resources in the course. They were not in the folder that Jose mentioned either. I also tried turning the .story file into a .zip file and went through the folders, and didn't find the resource PDFs there, either.

Unfortunately I am unable to share the file with you, but I'd like some clarification on how I can get the resource files if a client sends us one as we try very hard not to go back and forth with the client. Often times they can't find the file even when we send them the filepath because it was on another user's computer that they don't have access to.

if you are extract the .story file the pdf files are included as

      • .bin (not as .pdf)

      in the internal folder

      • story\media\
