Restricting Navigation in Engage Interactions

Hello! Is there a way to restrict navigation in Engage interactions so that the learner cannot move from tab to tab without listening to the entire audio file placed within that tab? One of our clients is requesting this functionality. I can see that I can restrict the learner moving on until they have viewed all tabs, but I don't see where I can restrict them from moving from tab to tab unless the audio file is complete. Thank you!

    Thank you Leslie!

So if I'm understanding correctly- there isn't a way to have the learner both control the interactivity in the tabs AND be restricted to hearing the entire audio file on each tab before they move to another. Sounds like we either need to do presentation mode (no interactivity) or keep the interactivity but the learner can leave each tab before hearing the complete audio. Is that right?

    Thanks!

  • Hi A L,

Correct - it's a one or another scenario in this set up.

    Good luck with your project!

Hi - I know this is an old thread but I am wondering the same thing and was checking if any changes have happened in the last few years to restrict the Engage tabs from navigating to the Next tab/slide until audio completes?

  • Hi Tracey!

We haven't changed this setting in Engage 360. It sounds like using Storyline 360 might work better for what you're looking to create. In Storyline 360, you can restrict navigation until the media completes by using triggers. Let me know if you need help setting up this type of interaction!

Hello.   I am working in a Tab Interaction that from a template in the content library.  It was a great start!  I've added more layers and buttons for them and am adding Audio to the base layer and the other layers.  I have not been able to figure out two things:  1) I want to require that the audio file in each tab run it's full length before allowing the learner to click the next tab/button, and 2) I want to require that all tabs be completed before moving to the next slide.   I know the answer lies within Triggers it eludes me.  I appreciate any assistance that can be provided.

        Hi Gayle,

Engage 360 is pretty limited when it comes to customizing the navigation conditions of an interaction. You don't get access to triggers in Engage 360, which is required when building conditional navigation.

You can, however, easily do this in Storyline 360, which has built-in triggers for control events such as "When media file completes" among others. Check out this article on creating tab interactions in Storyline 360 if you're interested in testing Storyline!

Once you've set up the tab interaction in Storyline 360, feel free to share a copy of your project file here and we'll be glad to show you how you can use triggers and variables to control the navigation and make listening to audio files mandatory. This ELH post also has a sample Storyline 360 file that you can check out for design ideas:

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for the reply and suggestion. I am testing importing the Engage Interactions into Storyline and then apply triggers to control navigation. I also will time how long it will take to rebuild the slides in Storyline. This course needs to be updated routinely so I want it to be as easy to use and edit as possible.
