Storyline File Disappeared
Hi Kathleen
try this:
- Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
- Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
- Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
- Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.
I'm having the same problem, and this guidance did not work. The file I was working on yesterday has completely disappeared. I searched in the %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline folder and there are no storyline files in this folder (see attached screenshot). There's nothing in Windows 11 version history either. It's just completely vanished, and I know I saved it yesterday (autosave was also enabled). Did the folder location for temp Storyline files change? Storyline really needs native versioning.

Hi RichardTomchuk-,
So sorry to hear you're having trouble locating your Storyline content.
Smart move opening a support case! I see that you've been working with my colleague, Enelluar. It looks like he just replied to your e-mail, sharing additional insight on this issue.
We can continue the conversation there!

I'm having the same problem, so it would be nice to know how RichardTomchuk-'s situation got resolved, if at all.

Hi MarcelaGarre697,
I understand how frustrating this can be, especially if the file contained a lot of recent work.
In Richard’s case, the investigation pointed toward OneDrive syncing as a possible factor. Since his local drive was also syncing through OneDrive, the recommendation was to avoid actively working on Storyline project files directly from cloud-synced locations.
As a best practice, we recommend:
- Saving and editing .story files locally on your computer first (for example, directly on your C: drive)
- Avoiding working directly from OneDrive, SharePoint, network drives, or other synced/cloud locations while editing
- Syncing or backing up the file only after closing Storyline
Storyline project files are stored locally, so unfortunately we don’t have access to recover missing files on our end. However, if you’re experiencing this issue as well, please feel free to start a support case with our team so we can help investigate your specific setup and look into possible recovery options with you.
