Storyline hangs when publishing to Word
Hi Folks,
I'm using Storyline in Windows 8 and when publishing to Word (2010), the dialog box says that it's publishing slide x of y, but then it just hangs. Other factors: The .story file I'm working on is small - just 7 slides, Two of the slides have multiple layers, Word is closed when I publish.
Please advise.
Thanks.

Christine,
I figured out what's happening, and I got it to work.
The problem is this: The Publish dialog box in Storyline is hanging because the process triggers a Save File dialog box in Word to pop up. Despite giving the file to be published a name and location within Storyline, Word is asking for the same thing, but Word's dialog box pops up behind/underneath Storyline. I found this out by using Alt+Tab, because I had the Storyline window maximized and the Windows toolbar hidden.
It seems that there is work to be done to make Storyline interact properly with either Windows 8, or Word 2010, or both.
FYI, I was publishing to my local folder that syncs with Google Drive (Docs), so that wasn't a factor.

Hi Christine, thank you for your post. This problem had been bothering for several days, and the solution was as simple as using alt-tab and selecting the conversion dialog that appears in word. For others, I was using Storyline update 11 with Word 2016.

A couple of our developers are having the same issue. There is a pop-up window that comes up behind Storyline from MS Word and Storyline just freezes as Michael has stated. I found if you go into MS Word (version 2010) - File - Options - Advanced. Once in Advanced scroll down to the General section and uncheck "Confirm file format conversion on open". Click OK and close MS Word. Try and re-publish again and see if that helps.
Hope everyone has a blessed day!

Hi Michael!
The first thing to check is the location of the content. Make sure that the Storyline files you're trying to publish are local files.
1. Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
2. You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
3. Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.
Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247(VS.85).aspxIf you've confirmed the files are local, it might be related to content on a specific slide. Does the process hang randomly, or for a specific slide?
Thanks!

Hi Michael,
I run both Windows 8 and Office 2010 on my machine. I notice this happening with other software, but I haven't run into that issue with Storyline. It's certainly good to know, though, thank you for sharing the information. I'm glad it worked out for you.
Have a great day!
Thanks Jason for sharing that here and I'd also want to check that you're using the most recent update of Storyline as this thread is from December 2012. You can find information on the release here and a link to download.
Thanks for sharing here Charles and I'm glad you found this older thread helpful!

Same problem here with SL2 v12, so nothing to do with SL version I think.
Seems to happen with huge files only (publishing questions banks to Word format here), after 150 pages generated.
Jason's Word tip did the trick. Many thanks.
If someone could check if there are still issues with SL3/360.
Hi Pierre,
I don't see that we have an issue like this logged for SL3/360.
You could download a free trial and test the Publish to Word functionality, or I'd be happy to help you test your file in those versions.
Simply attach your file here and I'll take care of the rest!

Still facing the issues. wonder to see these messages many years old and still the issue. I checked for all the above things, but still, it hangs up.
Hello Manpreet,
Thanks for reaching out!
Are you able to publish your course in other formats, such as Web, Review 360, or LMS? If only publishing to Word doesn't work, try doing a repair of your Storyline 360 installation and Microsoft Office to see if this helps.
If your course will not publish regardless of which format is selected, this could indicate the presence of possible data corruption in your project file. Reach out to our support team by opening a case here if publishing to any format doesn't work for you.
