Timeline does not play audio

I am trying to adjust textbox displays on the timeline so that the text is displayed at the appropriate time.  However, the audio will not play.  This makes adjusting the timeline EXTREMELY difficult.  Can someone please provide some insight as to why the audio will not play when I click on the play button while viewing the timeline?

Help on this would be greatly appreciated as I need to complete this 78 page presentation project.

  • I find it much easier to put the audio into something like Audacity, or even MS Photos and just record the times I want the text to appear and disappear. Then go to the timeline, and enter the start and end times. So much faster and accurate than trying to start and stop the audio in SL, and enter the times while playing.

Playing from the timeline is sometimes tricky, but you should be able to check it in preview.

I like your suggestion Walt.  I am putting the audio through Premier to convert to an MP4 and to  create a transcript so it is easy enough to mark the time.  Unfortunately, 4:42 on Premiere is not the same 4:42 on the SL timeline.  So I am back to guessing the best point and previewing and adjusting.  Do you have a trick to adjust for this discrepancy?  It seems longer into the video the greater the gap.

I wish while editing you could play the timeline, so you could hear the audio and edit the content timings, similar to any video editing tool.

  • Hi Katie,

    Thanks for reaching out!

I can confirm that you should be able to hear a preview of your audio using the 'Play' button in the timeline. I've attached a sample file for your reference so you can test this functionality.

Try testing the play functionality using my file, and let me know if it works for you. If it does not, and you're working locally when previewing your project file, try doing a repair of Storyline 360 to see if this helps.

  • Good morning Joe, I can hear the audio file when I am working in the timeline.  The snag is hearing the audio of the video while working in the timeline.  I am working on my local drive and I did a repair a few months ago.

  • I'm sorry, I really can't help with the time discrepancy. I usually just play the whole video in MS MovieMaker or Photos, and take my time from there. I've never had a problem with them.
