Trigger and States grayed out on Template created slide

Hi,
I created an SL 360 template for our team to use. But I want to add preset triggers and state changes for the template layout so the team can create fast builds. So I created the colored text boxes on the Master slide and then apply the triggers and state change on the Slide view Timeline. However, the text box states field is grayed out and I cannot apply any triggers. Why?

I will attach a sample of the project. The first slide is all built on the Slide View Timeline, and the second is a Master slide template.
Would anyone be able to help?

Thank You,

Carrie

  • Hi Carrie!

It sounds like you are having an issue editing states after applying a Master Slide layout. I’d be happy to help with this! Thank you for sharing your project file; that made troubleshooting much easier!

After testing this out in multiple versions of Storyline 360, we were unable to reproduce the issue. This appears to be expected behavior as placeholders in the Master Slide layouts cannot have states.

Not to worry! I found a workaround you can implement:

    1. Create a new scene (that is unlinked to any other scene). You can label it Reserved or a name of your choosing.
    2. In the Reserved scene, create a slide with the objects, such as text boxes, states, and triggers you need. This slide will act as a template that you can reuse in target slides.
    3. Copy and paste the slide template whenever you need to apply the text boxes with the states and triggers.
    4. When your course is complete you can delete the Reserved scene, or save it if you wish to use it in future projects.

Admittedly, that's not as simple as it would be to adjust those states in a Master Slide, but it is better than editing the states on every slide in your course.

Please let me know if this works for you or if you have any more questions!

  • Copy and paste the slide template whenever you need to apply the text boxes with the states and triggers.

You will be happier if you right-click and duplicate the slide. Then you can drag the duplicate to the scene where it belongs. Copy and paste is not always as reliable as Duplicate.

  • Thank you for helping me out with the template issue. I will have to have them set up, as you mentioned. Too bad that the triggers and state changes couldn't be applied to the Master Slide pre-set text boxes.
