Using picture as slider, not only thumb (slider itself invisible)

Hello everyone,

I'm not very advanced in using Storyline yet, but I hope that my question is not too obvious. I have tried searching but have not found an answer under my keywords.

I would like to animate a fly swatter as a slider. It should scare away a fly on a window and I would like to use a slider for the movement (but the typical slider should be invisible). I thought this would work because I found a very similar example on YouTube (a hand with a computer mouse moving back and forth on a desk - picture attached. It is a tutorial, but I don't get, how he has done the slider itself). I can certainly solve this differently (e.g. via motion path), but the whole exercise was really just to see how I can create really individual sliders that no longer look like sliders at all. So it's not just about filling the thumb of the slider with an image.

Does anyone have the crucial hint for me?

Many thanks in advance!

  • When you insert a slider, Storyline automatically creates a number variable to track the steps.

Typically, the user moves the thumb, and that automatically adjusts the variable. However, it can work the other way: if a trigger adjusts the variable, that moves the slider. For smoother movement, you need more steps.

This post has a file that explains how to get continuous movement with a dial. The same type of programming would work on sliders, too. You'll just have to experiment with the number of steps you use.

Personally, I think using a motion path would be easier and would provide more control.

Thanks for your response Judy, I'll check out that resource you mentioned.

Let's suppose the target someone is going for isn't necessarily smooth movement. Or for whatever other reason, they want to use a slider. Is the answer to the question is that it is not possible to replace the slider thumb with a picture?

I'm bumping this question because I have the exact same query today.

I want to replace the slider thumb with an image and make the slider track itself invisible.

I could achieve my intended interaction with motion paths but I think a slider could save me a certain amount of work - if I can adjust the look of it.

Thanks in advance to anyone in the community who can help.
