Where is the audio that was captured during screen recording?

I recently created a new story by recording someone using an internal software.  As we were using the software we used the microphone on the computer to record us talking about what was happening on screen including discussing some tips and tricks.

I imported the recording and created a step-by-step story. The issue I have is that the audio recording of our discussion was not imported as a separate item in the timeline.  The length of the screen recording shows that the audio was captured, but when I preview the slide the audio discussion doesn't play.

However, when I right-click on the Screen Recording Action in the timeline and click Action Fine Tuning and then click play, I can hear our discussion.

Why is that discussion not playing in the Story and more importantly, how can I get the audio file of the discussion?

  • Hi DougB72! When you insert a screen recording as Step-by-Step slides, Storyline only adds the screen frames and interactions. The original recording (including the audio) stays attached to the screen recording itself. That’s why you can hear it in Action Fine Tuning, but not during slide preview.

    To access the audio:

    1. Go to Insert → Screen Recording
    2. Select your existing recording
    3. Choose Video on a single slide

When you insert it this way, the narration appears on the timeline and plays normally. From there, you can right-click the audio track and export it, then add it to the slides where you need it.

So the audio is still part of the recording. It just isn’t placed on the slide timelines when Storyline converts the recording into step-by-step slides.
