Wording is shown twice after importing

I have a project I am working that is a translation of an existing project. The English project was exported for translating using File> Translating> Export to Word, and subsequently imported using File> Translating> Import. 
Most of the markers show text "shadowing". Deleting the text and copying/pasting the text again from the Word document does not solve the problem. Typing the text into the field also does not solve the problem. Re-importing the Word document also does not solve the problem.

What I've tried so far: I copied the text into Notepad to rule out any font or formatting issues. However, when I re-inserted the text, it still showed up twice / the second text is slightly offset.

I also copied the entire field from a version where the text only appears once and inserted the same text, and it showed up correctly (only once).

I attempted inserting spaces to make the two versions overlap, which caused the text to shift and display the duplicated or shadowed text.

Finally, I re-imported the original English version and the translation, but the same issue occurred.

If anyone has any advice on how to resolve this, I would greatly appreciate it.
