Display issues on slides with multiple layers

Is anyone else having this issue? In Storyline, when I have a slide with multiple layers, the contents of the last layer appear over the base layer. It makes no difference how many layers I have, the same thing happens. In story view, the slide appears as it should and when I preview, the slide works as it should. It is just when I click on the slide in story view to work on it in detail that the last layer appears over the base slide content. I cannot select any of the layer contents in base slide view, it just hides whatever is on the base slide. The timeline shows only the base slide contents and still allows me to select them, but I can't SEE the base slide item because the layer items appear over them. It's making it very hard to fine tune items on the base slide. And it's very weird. It is happening on ALL slides with multiple layers and even in different files. I've attached a screenshot of the error. The story view on the left is the way the slide should appear and the slide view is actually the last of five layers for this slide. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • It's impossible to tell from the image you posted, but here's my best guess: You inadvertently clicked the Lock Visibility icon for the layer.

Those eye icons on the right side of the Layers panel let you control what's showing during editing. By default, only the base layer has its visibility locked. But if a layer's visibility is locked, its contents will always appear while you're editing the slide.

If that's not the problem, then I suggest you upload a copy of the .story file with only that slide.

Here's more info about controlling what's visible.

For future reference, this Exchange Best Practices section is for general questions about eLearning. You’re asking how to do something in the software. That type of question is a better fit in the Discuss Articulate Products section of the website. That's where those of us who regularly answer questions about how to use the software spend more of our time. And that's where more folks go to search for answers specifically related to Storyline, Rise, and other parts of Articulate 360.

That's it! I had to go into the settings for each layer to pause the timeline and was clicking over on the far side of the layer label to pull up the settings and thereby accidentally locked the visibility. Thanks.

You're welcome! Pay it forward when you can. 😊

And welcome to the "I clicked something I didn't know existed" club. 😆
