Expert Insight Needed!

Hi Everyone! I am a graduate student in an Instructional Design and Performance Technology program. In my Distance Learning Policy and Planning course, we are conducting an informal research investigation on current use of technology in our field. We are tasked with finding out what practitioners are using out in the real world, and how they feel about those technologies.

Can you please share the platforms you use and your own personal feelings about these technologies (what works well, what is challenging, etc.) for purposes such as:

Delivering instruction or training (such as an LMS)

Communication and collaboration

Assessments or testing

Analytics

Thank you so much for helping me learn from your experience!

  • Currently, I use the following tools/technology:

    • LMS - Absorb
    • LXP - Degreed
    • Authoring tool - Articulate Rise and Storyline
    • Graphics design - Adobe Illustrator, photoshop, (occasionally use InDesign and Firefly)
    • Video creation - Camtasia, Adobe PremierPro, Vyond, Google Vids

Generally, these tools do a pretty good job of helping me achieve my goals so no real complaints there. The LMS helps with assessments and some of the analysis I need and the rest I do with the help of spreadsheets and Gemini. It's easy to collaborate with Articulate whether for review or for co-creation.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hello!

We use Docebo as our LMS - been very pleased with it since we switched last year (have used Thought Industries and Cornerstone in the past).

Build training materials using: Vyond, Camtasia, Articulate Storyline & Rise (partnered with Mighty by Maestro for personal projects), WalkMe, WellSaid Labs, SnagIt, Vimeo & Descript.

    Review: Articulate Review

Assessment: We do this directly in Rise/Storyline.

Currently researching: 7Taps, Scribe and Archbee for additional content creation.

    Communication/Collab: MS Teams & Notion

    Thanks!

    Elyse

My toolset is similar to what's been mentioned, and it works fine for what we do. If I could change one thing, it would be how we currently use our LMS as a Wiki/Knowledge Base/Knowledge Management System (though it is not designed for that).

    • LMS: Adobe Learning Manager
    • Authoring: Articulate360 AI suite
    • Video/sound editing: Camtasia
    • Simple video screen capture: SnagIt
    • Graphic assets/mild editing: Adobe Creative Cloud (i.e., Adobe Express)
    • Graphic tweaks/ad hoc: MS PowerPoint (also used for Storyboarding)
    • Grab text from existing graphic: SnagIt
    • Writing assistance: MS Copilot/Grammarly
    • Video housing (internal): MS Sway (or whatever they call it now)
    • Team collab: MS Teams/Outlook/O365 (shared docs)
    • Project planning/management (internal to my L&D team): MS Planner

  • Hi Charli!

My tools of choice continue to evolve over time, but below is what I'm currently using the majority of the time.

    • LMS - Cornerstone (Not my favorite, but what my employer currently licenses)
    • Communication/Collaboration - MS Teams, SharePoint, Engage, Articulate Review
      • We try to get the most out of our M365 Enterprise license
    • Assessments - SCORM courses w/quizzing are captured by the LMS, MS Forms for simple tests
    • Analytics - Same as above
    • Authoring - Articulate Storyline & Rise, PowerPoint
      • Storyline offers the most customization, but development can take longer. Rise is very simple and great for micro learnings
    • Video - Camtasia, Create Studio 4
    • Graphics - Canva, Photoshop, various online resources
  • Hi Charli, congrats on your study and I'm happy to offer the following tools of choice:

    • LMS: Totara
    • Authoring: Articulate Storyline and Rise
    • Communication/ collaboration: MS Teams, Outlook and Review360
    • Video: Canva to edit
    • Audio: Adobe Enhance Speech v2 to clean up audio files
    • Assessments: Totara for quizzes attached to uploaded courses, MS Forms for basic quizzes and feedback
    • Writing/ editing support: Co-pilot
  • Thank you Charli, for starting this thread. As I am also interested in the feedback so I am glad to share mine:

    Delivering instruction or training
LMS: SuccessFactors (I would not recommend this LMS to anybody, it is the tool my company is using)
Sharepoint (believe it or not, and we are still hosting some html file packages there that we cannot publish to our LMS)

    Communication and collaboration
MS Teams for virtual training sessions
Whatsapp for our higher education students and certain employees (in Healthcare a large portion of our workforce do not use a computer on a daily basis. Whatsapp is often the best way to reach people).
Articulate Review during the content creation process

    Assessments or testing
Questionmark (scormed and delivered via our LMS mostly).
We also create surveys on Questionmark that we share via an open link (mainly course participation surveys).
Articulate Storyline questions in some instances for corporate initiatives

    Analytics:
Questionmark has great analystics on it's questions (i.e. how does the question rate in terms of difficulty, which allows the author to investigate the fairness of that question)
SuccessFactors is very limited, we have had to build custom reports just to be able to see completions per location. Reporting is a challenge
    Authoring: Articulate Storyline and Rise

    Other Authoring tools
    Video: Adobe Premier Pro
    Animation: Vyond
Image editing and creation: Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

  • Hello! This is a great question and it's fun to learn what others in the field are using!

For course creation, I typically use Articulate Rise or Storyline as the course base. I sometimes incorporate Powtoon videos I create into the Rise course to add a video explainer to the content. I use Envato as a resource for pictures/videos, etc. My company also has an online library of graphics and videos I can use. I have been dabbling with Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Animate as well. I have access to Adobe's Creative Cloud so I have lots of other programs at my disposal, its just a matter of learning them. I am always excited to learn about different programs and how they can be used! My company uses SuccessFactors as an LMS, but are looking to change in the next handful of years. That system also performs our analytics and tracks employee completions. For quizzes I use a combination of Rise/Storyline built quizzes and the LMS. The Rise/Storyline quizzes only track as completions in the LMS so if I want analytics on each specific question, I will build the quizzes in the LMS.
