New in Labs: Hyperlink Enhancements
Hyperlink enhancements is still in development and will receive updates as part of Labs. Functionality will change over time. Some options will be modified and others may be removed based on feedback and feature stability.
Looking for a quick and easy way to link to other lessons in your course? Now you've got it with our latest Labs experiment, which enhances block text hyperlinks to include both internal and external links.
How to Use/Access Hyperlink Enhancements
This feature is available wherever the text formatting toolbar is available and as an option in content formatting for most blocks with images (see the full list in the FAQs below).
Linking Text
- Select the text for your link, then click the Hyperlink icon on the formatting toolbar.
- Scroll or enter text to find the lesson title and select it.
- Click Insert.
Linking Images
- Hover over the block with images and click the Content icon in the formatting toolbar.
- Click the Edit Link icon next to the image.
- Scroll or enter text to find the lesson title and select it.
- Click Insert.
Need to add an external link instead? No problem, just paste the URL in the field and click Insert like normal.
Hyperlink Enhancements FAQ
Are there any collaboration or accessibility issues?
Collaborators who don't have this experiment enabled won't be able to modify a link to point to a different lesson. This feature hasn't been evaluated to see if it meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility requirements.
If I disable this experiment will internal lesson links still work?
Yes, though you won't be able to modify them to link to a different lesson unless hyperlink enhancements is enabled.
What happens if I add text or images with lesson hyperlinks to a block template or question bank?
Similarly to what happens with button blocks, hyperlinks that link to lessons are converted to plain text or, in the case of images, have the hyperlink removed, when you add them to a block template or question bank. External hyperlinks will remain.
Where can I add links to images?
Image hyperlinks are supported in the following blocks/lessons at this time:
- Image centered
- Image & Text
- Carousel
- Two-, Three-, and Four-column grid
- Process
- Timeline
- Accordion
- Tabs
- Labeled graphic (marker media only)
- Knowledge check
- Quizzes
- Question banks (external hyperlinks only)
Share Your Feedback
We plan to expand hyperlink enhancements throughout this experiment and want to know what you'd like to see next. Would image hyperlinks be helpful to your workflow? Or maybe links within lessons? Is there something else that we haven't thought of at all?
Use the feedback survey to give us your wish list of hyperlink enhancements! Your feedback will directly influence the development of this feature in Rise, so consider sharing your thoughts on the following topics:
- Uses. How are you using hyperlink enhancements? Does it meet your needs? What other types of hyperlinks would you like to see?
- Bugs. Is anything not working as expected?
- Improvements. How could this feature be better?
- Insights. How does this feature benefit you and your learners?
You can enable and disable this feature from the Labs page in account settings. Share your thoughts by clicking the Share feedback button next to the Beta icon or by accessing the feedback form directly.

To tack onto it...use case....
I use Carousel for step-by-step instructions in quick-reference guides. (I like it better than Process because you get a bit more room for text, larger images, the horizontal movement is a little more subtle, and the block doesn't force its way to the top of the screen which can be dizzying. But I digress.)
Anyway, the images are of software forms with lots of fields. There's always a balance to calculate between having 15 instruction lines under the image, or six of the same image (...cont'd...) to address all the fields in an area of the application screen. Especially if several of those fields require some cautions or additional explanation.
I usually address that stuff prior to the walk-through, but a reminder at picture 10 would be nice; they might have forgotten by then. So the idea is a "click the image to learn more" hyperlink to a reference page, with expanded explanation dedicated to the fields visible in that image. Now I only need one image and a couple of lines.
But once on that page, how to get the user back to the carousel to continue.
Option 1: Ability to return to the carousel via anchor on the page...or..better...return to that image in the carousel. (That's probably asking for the moon.)
Option 2: Hyperlink options with "Open in separate window" (_blank) ability, so the page opens in its own browser window. That's something I can try next.
Option 3: (the moon again) A way to have labeled graphics embedded in the carousel. Now I can add opt-in caution notes or reminders for specific fields.
Thank you so much for taking time to describe these use cases. This is very helpful. Our team will be sure to discuss this in context with the other feedback we're receiving. We are watching the feedback survey closely. Please continue to share your feedback as new ideas come to mind.

First time toying with the hyperlink feature today. I see HUGE potential with this.
1- Page anchors please!
2- Where I added one (image in a Carousel), I did not see a way to remove it, like if I had applied it to the wrong thing. Would be nice to have a "no link" option in the drop-down to break it, or a trashcan on the Edit Hyperlink pop-up. I had to insert a duplicate image, copy the content, and delete the one with the link. Unless I'm missing something.
Thanks JeffreyDavis-15 !
1. We're hearing this loud and clear. Our team will be looking into it.
2. The current solution here is not intuitive. Thank you for the feedback. I like the idea of a delete button. You currently have to (1) re-open the hyperlink editor, (2) clear all text from the hyperlink, and (3) re-insert.

I may be totally missing it, but I don't see a way to add hyperlinks to images for the Text/Columns block --
Should the hyperlink feature be available here? I do see the option for other blocks with images (like the Image & Text block) -

After testing the new Hyperlink Enhancements in Labs, I think it's a fantastic addition to Rise! Being able to jump to other lessons directly via text, images, etc. is a huge workflow improvement.
I, as others have mentioned above, would like to strongly request three specific additions to make this feature even more powerful:
- In-Lesson Anchors: The ability to link to specific blocks or headings within the same lesson. This would allow learners to skip ahead to relevant sections or easily return to previous points.
- Custom Block Support: Like others have mentioned, I use Custom Blocks extensively for unique designs. Having image-linking functionality within Custom Blocks is essential for maintaining a cohesive experience.
- Navigation Logic: Currently, these links can bypass restricted navigation. It would be great to have an option to lock these links until certain criteria are met, or conversely, use them specifically as fast-track options for experienced learners.
Thanks, Articulate Team, for letting us help you test with the Lab experiments!
I've sent these requests over the team, AmEy_Michelle! I'm happy to hear that you are finding it impactful!

I found it a little confusing that the "zoom in on image" checkbox is still active when an image link is set up. It can't zoom in anymore since the image opens a new tab. Might be good to fade that setting out and add a note about the active link.
Hi martini! This is great feedback! I've added shared it with Kyle and his team!

Great feature, especially for images. Is there any difference compared to the button or button-stack interaction? As already mentioned, it would be even better if you could link directly to a title or subtitle within a lesson.
I'm glad that you're liking this feature, Natalija_I! I've documented this feedback on linking directly to a title or subtitle within a lesson. To follow up on your question, can you share what would be the idea scenario when it comes to button and button-stack interactions?

Just an idea for the new Custom Blocks feature. I'm using Custom Blocks more than any other feature lately because it allows so much more unique design in Rise. It would be great if image linking was also a feature in this Custom Block area.
Thank you! We've got this on our radar. Once we've collected enough feedback on the general Rise experience we hope to iterate and bring the same functionality to Custom block.

This is great. What would be even more awesome would be if we could set anchors and be able to jump to a specific part of a lesson, either from another lesson or from within the same lesson.

I concur!
Great idea, AllisonKing! I've logged this internally. If you have any other ideas for enhancing the feature, don't hesitate to let us know!

I discovered an issue if you add a link to an image that also has image Zoom turned on. In that case, image Zoom does not work, but the link does. Obviously both features require clicking on the image, and the link has precedence.
The logic is is understood , but the image zoom function is lost if both features are used.

Nice feature. But when using it, you can skip restricted navigation. We need to have that in mind when combining the Hyperlink and Skip-ahead quizzes/restricted navigation.
Hi RalfHartmann-16! This is helpful feedback that we will definitely consider! Appreciate you jumping in early for testing!
