3D Timeline: A Timeline Learners Travel Through
You have six milestones and a deadline. The SME sends a slide with a line, six dots, and a paragraph under each one. Learners skim it and click Next.
I wanted to try something different.
The 3D Timeline turns each milestone into a stop on a path. Learners move forward one checkpoint at a time, and the details for each stop appear as they arrive.
Why This Works for Learning
When sequence matters, how we present information makes a difference.
Rather than displaying every event at once, this interaction uses segmentation and progressive disclosure to help learners process information one milestone at a time.
The 3D path also provides a visual representation of sequence and progression, making it easier to follow how events unfold.
At Bloom's Understand level, learners can identify milestones, explain their significance, and recognize chronological relationships. Pairing the timeline with questions about what changed between milestones can encourage deeper analysis.
How to Use It in Articulate
I built this using my 3D Timeline generator at eLearningDesign.org.
It includes Quick Build, which lets you generate milestone content using your preferred AI tool, then paste everything back into the generator at once. Colors, content, and styling are customizable.
The completed interaction exports as HTML.
- Rise 360: Add a Code block and insert the generated HTML, or upload a compatible HTML project ZIP.
- Storyline 360: Insert the exported HTML as a Web Object.
- Other platforms: Use the HTML export with authoring tools or learning platforms that support custom HTML.
No need to rebuild the interaction with individual layers, triggers, or animations.

Hi Anne - this is SUCH a cool tool to make milestones come to life!! I just checked out some of the other examples too, like the comparison charts (something I use on the daily). Holy cow, game changer 🤩
I'm glad I decided to casually peruse the examples this morning 🙂

Thank you, Jen! When Articulate Rise introduced code blocks last year it was a game changer for me. I have been creating interactions ever since and now have over 100 templates. I honestly love building these out.

Amazing! I would have loved to use these when I was in Canvas several years ago (I think the wildest interaction I created was a hotspotted image, with the help of our in-house media team). Thank you so much for sharing your work, and continue having fun!!
This is so cool agenovese! Thank you for sharing with the community. I love that you also break down how to use it, common use cases, and even why it works on your site.
I'd love to include this example in an upcoming Weekly Newsletter, and also connect with you to see if you'd be interested in sharing some more of your work.

Thank you so much, Katie-Jordan!
I would absolutely love to have the 3D Timeline featured in the Weekly Newsletter, and I'd be thrilled to share more with the community!
I've now built well over 100 interactive learning templates, and I'm always experimenting with new ways to bring custom interactions into Rise 360. I'd love the opportunity to share more examples, ideas, and practical how-tos with the community.
I'd be happy to connect and explore what might be most useful. Thank you again for reaching out!
