Talk to an Interactive Avatar in Articulate Storyline
In this demo I've added an interactive avatar from HeyGen in to Storyline via a Web Object.
I gave the avatar the persona of an eLearning expert, so if you ask him questions on that topic, he'll answer.
I haven't gone in to the process of creating the avatar in HeyGen, as there are numerous avatar vendors out there that are most likely able to do the same thing, and everyone will probably have their own preferences. That said, I have written a blog post discussing the demo, some of the pitfalls, and how I can see this sort of thing being used int he future.

Great post and demo - thanks. Certainly something I need to explore further

Thanks David. If you do explore this further I'd love to hear how you get on.

Is there any info on how to get started with this, or a guide for someone not advanced with html...I do have access to heygen.
- DavidTaitSuper Hero
I haven't written a guide but hopefully the following info will steer you in the right direction.
When you go to embed the interactive avatar from inside HeyGen there is a screengrab showing what goes in to the html file (see image). Once you've created the html file, upload it to a web server with https and point your web object in Storyline towards that.
Let me know how you get on.

Thank you... I think first I need to learn how to obtain a web server that I can upload to.

This is fantastic! Why did you chose GPT-4o mini?
- DavidTaitSuper Hero
In all honesty I used the GPT that HeyGen defaulted to. On top of that I gave it a specific persona and gave it some URLs to tailor its knowledge base.

Ok this is really cool!
I will need to check into this further

Glad you like it!

Now that was interesting. Definitely some quirks but overall a cool experiment. It even had a little bit of humor.
- DavidTaitSuper Hero
Yes, very quirky in places, he's very sure of himself!

This is amazing! So many possibilities. It's opened up a whole new realm for e-learning. Thanks DavidTait for sharing.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, there are a lot of possibilities and it will be interesting to see how others use this sort of thing in their e-learning.

unfortunately it didn't work for me and I can't see the avatar :(
- DavidTaitSuper Hero
The avatar can sometimes take a couple of seconds to load, even on a fast connection. Did you try waiting for a moment or two?
Other than that I'm not sure why you don't see it. Is JavaScript etc all enabled in your browser?
Which browser and OS are you viewing on?
- PaulSchlage-26bCommunity Member
I am using Internet Explorer but also tried it with Chrome. Furthermore i waited a little bit, but maybe it is connected to security settings within our company. :(

I encountered the same issue.
- DavidTaitSuper Hero
That's a shame. I wonder why this happens for some people but not for others.
- DannyMorissetteCommunity Member
It's the same for me... 😕 Probably a security issue on my end.

This is great, David, thanks for sharing! Would you also share some more information like:
did you integrate an assistant GPT to let Phil answer topic-related ? If so, what about tokens and costs? And I guess the reason why you chose GPT-4o mini is, because it is faster?- DavidTaitSuper Hero
To create something quite simple like this was a lot simpler than it looks.
I used the GPT that HeyGen defaulted to and within that made a few additions, all within the HeyGen UI - no coding skills required apart from creating the html page to embed in Storyline's web object.
In HeyGen there are some good example knowledge bases that they use for their own examples. These are a good starting point to help you understand the structure of how to add a persona to your avatar. There is also space to add URLs that can be used for it to pull specific knowledge from.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the API version is far more customisable and probably more useful from a commercial perspective, but for the purposes of my experiment I found the standard HeyGen embed to be all I needed.

Hi David,
Is the only way you can provide info for the knowledge base through a url? or can you upload docs to use as a basis for the knwoledge?

This is exactly what we are wanting to do in a course we're building now. Thanks for sharing this DavidTait
- DavidTaitSuper Hero
It would be good to hear how you get on. Most specifically if you encounter any issues that you manage to resolve as that sort of info is always the most useful!

Thanks for sharing this, DavidTait! Great example and it's exciting to think about the possibilities.
Does it say something about me that I had a good convo with Phil? :)
I was able to interact with the avatar easily on my Mac using Safari, however, experienced issues in my locked-down work environment. This could be managed by having our IT depart allow access though.
