Allow Rewind Function on Restricted Timelines

As a rule, due to the nature of our business and contracts with unions, we must ensure that our learners are watching the full slide or video without fast forwarding through the content, but the restricted timeline does not allow rewinding or jumping back a few seconds (5 or 10) or to any point previously viewed until the entire video or slide has completed.

This is extremely frustrating for our learners as a slight distraction could mean missing an important concept or content until possibly the end of the 15 minute video when they would then be able to drag the seekbar back.

Requests have come in to also adjust the replay icon to allow small segments of time on that icon (which does not seem to work on a restricted seekbar w the slide set to resume saved state - another issue).

  • Hi Everyone!

Thank you for the feedback on the type of functionality you'd like to see in Storyline 360!

I'm happy to share that we are tracking a feature request to allow the seek-bar to be dragged backwards, while forward seeking remains restricted. I've included all of your voices in this request! We'll be sure to notify you if this enhancement makes it to our product roadmap.

Have a great rest of your week!

I agree we need a rewind function. Everything looks great then I have this button that sticks out like a sore thumb for 15 second rewind.

      Hello BessyPlaza,

Thanks for sharing your experience! I can see how having a separate 15-second rewind button would stand out when everything else in your course looks just the way you want it.

I'm curious, what kinds of courses are you building where learners need to rewind while the timeline is restricted? And how often do you find yourself adding that button across your projects?

Your perspective helps us better understand how this limitation affects course design and the learner experience. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts!

I can answer from our team's perspective.

Most of our lessons involve some sort of process demonstration via screen recording or video that we put into Storyline showing multiple steps and touchpoints for the learner on the equipment. With over 20,000 of these learners, there are many in various stages of understanding and/or muscle memory for those actions. Rewinding to catch those touchpoints is important.

With on demand learning, learners are also in various environments that can be distracting or loud, so missing a small section of the video or process affects the overall understanding and absorption of the material. But waiting until the 5 or 15 minutes of the process is completed is torture, especially in the longer videos.

Our seekbar MUST be restricted in the forward motion until the lesson has been played out due to compliance and regulatory rules for the industry we are in.

We have used JavaScript to add buttons for rewinding 10 seconds at a time and dragging the seekbar backwards with the forward restricted until first pass. It is "simple enough" for our group of designers to add in given enough time to learn JavaScript and toy with it, it should be equally as simple for the developers of SL to do the same and enable that option in the player. It would only be of value to all those who use Articulate for that option.

Sincerely appreciate the consideration on this.

  • That is wonderful to hear, Steven!
I am certain that this learning best practice will suit all learners' needs!

Hi StevenBenassi, has this feature been developed yet for rewinding videos in Storyline? I don't see it on the roadmap you've linked here, nor have I see any articles mentioning it. Thanks!

        Hello AmandaScott-c37,

Thanks for reaching out! I can confirm that this is currently not a feature in Storyline. We do not have any updates to share on this feature request to rewind videos in Storyline. I've shared your insight with our product team so they know this is important to your workflow! We'll share future updates in this thread, so all are in the loop!

  • I agree with this request for an enhancement. Our learners have repeatedly expressed frustration at not being able to jump back even a few seconds to gain clarity on a content point. The content is technical and it's easy for them to miss a few words that then hinder their understanding of the remainder of a video.

I couldn't agree more. It can be frustrating as a learner to have to go through the entire of the video and miss one major point and not being able to follow the remainder of the lesson.

  • We could definitely use this at my company as well, as we are getting complaints about not being able to rewind/replay during a video rather than waiting to the end and having to try and remember what place we wanted to watch again.

  • Adding this functionality would improve our learner experience greatly!
