Hello!

My name is Samantha Shoner. I'm currently working as a teacher in Japan, but I'm planning on returning to the US next year and have been considering a career change to Instructional Design.

I'm new to this industry, and I still have a lot of questions. I have a degree in Digital Media and 11 years of teaching experience. I hope that will be a good starting point. I don't really know what to expect or what questions to ask, so I welcome any advice you can give me.

  • Welcome, Samantha_Shoner!

Your intro caught my eye because my brother also works in Japan. He's up in Fukushima City. Alas, I haven't made it over there, yet. But it certainly looks beautiful. I hope you've gotten to enjoy the sites and the culture.

  • What an awesome experience Samantha_Shoner! As Thomas mentioned, you sound like you'll fit right in for instructional design. Are there any specific topics you are exploring right now? Happy to help point you to some resources.

One thing I'll call you is our Weekly Challenges. I feel like this is such a great way to get hands-on and try things out with a little guidance. Plus, then you can see how others approached the same prompt and learn from their examples, too.

First, Samantha_Shoner I applaud you for teaching abroad. That is friggin awesome! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

By virtue of your life and work experiences, you've got what it takes to have a career in corporate instructional design (the combo of your teaching experience + digital media).

For specific insights into eLearning instructional design you can check out Tom K's (Articulate staff) eLearning blog.

This post is a good primer.
