Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to share a short demo or interaction to help course designers learn more about xAPI. 

You don't need to know xAPI or build a working demo using xAPI in Storyline to participate this week. For example, Holly's course is a perfect starting point for anyone new to xAPI.

You can build a simple demo project if you're already familiar with xAPI. Please include your source file so others can learn from your work.

Rise: Learn All About xAPI

This course is a good resource for xAPI newbies. Even though it's a few years old, it does a great job covering the basics. Please don't feel like you need to build something this comprehensive for this week's challenge. I like the information-based approach Holly used to design the course. It’s a great starting point for anyone new to xAPI because it doesn't require building an actual demo.

    How Can xAPI Help You Be a Better People Manager?

    Tracy's comment made me think that it doesn't really matter what course designers think of xAPI (or anything else) if our clients don't see how it can help them do things easier, faster and better. So here's my demo to sell my understanding of the benefits of xAPI to a manager. And since Tracy helped spark my thought, my demo uses a visual approach she used a couple challenges back--a short sim look and feel. Thanks Tracy!

      This is so impactful and a wonderful way to compare one of the key differences between SCORM and xAPI reporting. Your example has helped solidify what output might look like with either an LMS or LRS.

    This challenge has prompted an educational week for me. Over the past few days, I have been wrapping my mind around the concepts I was introduced to, and decided to make a tutorial I can review later to help me remember what I've learned. It's currently incomplete, although I plan to update this as I gain more knowledge and practice.

      I liked the set up, especially the implications section with the 3 profiles because you can see how each person's experience would be different.

      Super helpful. Great exercise. I like how you interpreted the challenge. I struggled a little with the object urls.

        Thanks for the feedback, Jodi. As I was exploring I found that, like any language there is some interpretation involved. Different verbs may have different levels of the same meaning. Different people, may define different objects with different URLS. Still seams to be more of an art than a science.

      Hey Ron, I think it's great that you're focusing on the structure of statements since it can be a difficult concept for people to wrap their heads around.

      I just wanted to point out when you covered the Object ID, you've linked to the activity TYPES registry. The Object ID *should* be something like 'www.wonderland.com/places/bank/' rather than 'http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/place'. According to the xAPI spec, the activity type would instead be placed as the value for Object > Definition > Type.

        Thanks, Ben. I watched some tutorials and now see that the Object is not going to be a predefined URI but rather specific to the activity. This is why my use of Alice in Wonderland is not super helpful to describe the
        Objects. Thanks for the learning opportunity.

      Update: I have added actual xAPI statements to the several interactions in this demo and you can now download the demo with the built in xAPI statements to upload to your own LRS or LMS with LRS capabilities. You can also view the output from when I did this with TalentLMS. (all in the resource tab)

    Here is my 2nd example.

    This is an old school baseball game (arcade version) that sends xAPI statements about what is happening in the game.

    To see the statements in action, click on the resource tab and download the example (as a ZIP file). Upload it to your favorite LMS with LRS capability. (TalentLMS is a good option and you can play for free). xAPI will be under reports in TalentLMS. You can see a print out in the resources tab as well. (or optionally you can play it in my Scorm Cloud Account - https://cloud.scorm.com/sc/InvitationConfirmEmail?publicInvitationId=c481368f-dbf9-4f3b-bbc9-6c6ce50bd9b6 ) AND I will email you your xAPI print out.

        Yes, Daniel. The game is hard with the button and the slider. But that was the point. I'm glad you had fun recreating the pitch and bat interaction I created. For my game their are multiple pitch paths and speeds, and multiple possible paths after the ball is struck by the bat based on location of bat when the contact is made. I added xAPI statements to give the learner a play by play of each pitch and the results. I wish besides sending xAPI there was a way Storyline could display the stream as well. Maybe with a WebObject and a LRS the reports in realtime (TalentLMS only reports after the fact as far as I can tell.)

        Thank you Jodi ! As I said, I am not familiar with xAPI so it was natural for me to compare it with SCORM.
        I just finished a 3 month training to become an instructional designer and I’m wondering why we didn’t cover this. Maybe because we already had so much to see in just 3 months or maybe it’s not yet really used by businesses in France, I don’t know. It seems way more interesting to get those data, not just to follow the learner’s journey but also as a designer to see what works and what can be improved (like why most of the learners ain’t using the memo ? is it not relevant ? is it not easily accessible ? That would be interesting !).

      It's astonishing not just how much content Devlin and his team were able to compile on the topic, but also how well they were able to communicate it all! Definitely a site I will be frequenting time and again.

        Yes he shares some great resources ! His youtube channel is awesome too. I intend to dive deeper into javascript and xAPI during the summer and his tutorials are really well written.

    My one recommendation would be to use large hotspots for the navigation.

      Thank you Glenn, I was wondering if the navigation wasn’t a bit too thin as well. I was going for a clean/simple design but it shouldn’t be at the expense of navigation ! I’ll change it.
      I wanted to put both english and french versions because I think it might interest others from my field in France so I intend to share it on LinkedIn (if I haven’t put anything « wrong » about xAPI in it !).
