How to Find and Create 360° Images for Your Storyline 360 Projects
With the 360° images feature in Storyline 360, you’ve got some cool and powerful ways to build your own immersive interactions. But before you jump in and start getting creative, you’ll need to find 360° image assets. Not sure where or how to get your hands on 360° images? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to find and create your own 360° images for your Storyline 360 projects.
Finding 360° images?
Although 360° images—sometimes referred to as 360 panoramic or photo spheres—are gaining popularity, they can still be hard to find. If you’re just looking to see what’s possible with 360° images, or if you want to create an example project to add to your portfolio, then using 360° images you find online can be a great option.
First things first, you might be thinking: are 360° images available in Content Library 360? As of right now, there aren’t any supported 360° images available in Content Library 360. If you need a 360° image, you have three main options:
Buy one on a stock photo site. This will give you the largest amount of options but can be expensive.
Search online for free 360° images. Some websites, such as Pixexid, offer free 360° images you can instantly download and use in your Storyline 360 projects.
Create your own. I’ll explain how to do this later on in this article.
One important thing to note is that there isn’t a surefire way to determine what is or isn’t a 360° image since there isn’t a file format specific to 360° images and people don’t always tag their photos with relevant keywords. For these reasons, there is no easy way to filter between regular images and 360° images when you’re searching online.
So how can you spot a 360° image during your search? Let me walk you through some things to look out for.
1. The image is distorted
The most obvious way to tell if an image is a 360° image is if the flat version of the 360° image looks distorted. For example, look at this image below.
See how the bed and other other elements in the image are distorted? That’s because it’s a 360° image.
2. The image has a 2:1 aspect ratio
If the image is twice as wide as it is tall—or has a 2:1 aspect ratio—it’s likely a 360° image.
3. Upload it to Storyline 360
To double-check if it’s a true 360° image, insert it into Storyline 360 to see how it displays. If it really is a 360° image, it won’t look distorted and will render correctly, as shown below.
Creating your own 360° images?
It can be challenging to find images that relate to your content. And if your course content requires learners to be immersed in a specific environment, custom images are your best bet. In that case, the easiest way to get the exact image you need is to create your own!
Some phones, such as the Pixel, have a built-in feature that allows you to capture your own 360° images. But not all phones have this feature. For example, an iPhone camera with panoramic mode enabled captures 240° cylindrical panoramas. And although you can still add 240° images into Storyline 360, they won’t render correctly, as seen in this example.
If your phone doesn’t include a built-in feature that allows you to take 360° equirectangular images, no need to worry! There are a growing number of 360° camera apps you can download to create your own. Any captured images will first appear as a distorted flat portrait, but you can use Photoshop or another photo-editing app to edit them for the best quality experience. None of the 360 images load. I tried Chrome and Edge. I tried posting a file to Review 360 and viewing courses others made with 360 images, and it's just a blank slide. Is this a comment error?
Hi Cathy, we aren't aware of any issues with viewing 360° images after publishing to Review. Are you able to share the Review link so I can check on my end? Or share the 360° image being used or the .story file so I can investigate to see if there's an issue with the image itself?
I just used a sample I found in the Newsletter you guys sent out. I republished it to see if that would allow me to view it but it didn’t work. The 3D image always just appears blank.
I absolutely love this feature and have already started to built a virtual tour of our offices for visiting staff and new employees as part of their induction. If your office is a large space you can use triggers to navigate to other slides and not just be "stuck" with the markers or hotspots.
Next project is to use a 360 image to act as a navigation portal for learners e.g. click the screen to see how to send an email, click the printer to see how to print etc.
Great feature overall. I'd recommend watching multiple videos on how to take 360 pictures effectively (the one with a broom handle is the method I used) 😀

The camera is using Samsung Note 9, set to 3:4 photo. Storyline prompted a message saying "This image might not render correctly. For the best result, use a 360 panoramic image with 2:1 aspect ratio".
This is what I did plus I used the broomstick method to keep the phone in the same place, drop me a reply if this doesn't make sense.
Once you have this photo, I shared it with myself, I didn't publish to Google Earth as the office space is sensitive, but just saved it to my device and uploaded to Articulate.
Is anyone out there creating their own 360 images using a graphics package? Finding the exact right picture might be hard for what we want to do. If my graphic artist could produce the "rooms" we want to use it would be ideal.
Do you have any suggestions for tools to help create Line Art images?
Also, I am wondering if the Mars Rover image in the "Mars Rover Expedition" course (by @TomKuhlmann) is a 360? I am looking to do something more technical for aerospace engineering types.

I was very excited to use this feature and it blew away my clients, but when I published the course to the LMS all I got was a blank screen (using a 360 image) Tried everything, it just wouldn't work, so I had to remove it. It was fine on SCORM cloud and on the review site.
I’m sorry that’s happening, Steven! Especially after doing all that work! Do you know if your IT department blocks the use of WebGL? Without that, 360-degree images won’t load or display. But before you jump in and start getting creative, you’ll need to find 360° image assets. Not sure where or how to get your hands on 360° images? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to find and create your own 360° images for your Storyline 360 projects.

Finding 360° images?

Although 360° images—sometimes referred to as 360 panoramic or photo spheres—are gaining popularity, they can still be hard to find. If you’re just looking to see what’s possible with 360° images, or if you want to create an example project to add to your portfolio, then using 360° images you find online can be a great option.
\n
First things first, you might be thinking: are 360° images available in Content Library 360? As of right now, there aren’t any supported 360° images available in Content Library 360. If you need a 360° image, you have three main options:

Buy one on a stock photo site. This will give you the largest amount of options but can be expensive.
\n
Search online for free 360° images. Some websites, such as Pixexid, offer free 360° images you can instantly download and use in your Storyline 360 projects.
\n
Create your own. I’ll explain how to do this later on in this article.
One important thing to note is that there isn’t a surefire way to determine what is or isn’t a 360° image since there isn’t a file format specific to 360° images and people don’t always tag their photos with relevant keywords. For these reasons, there is no easy way to filter between regular images and 360° images when you’re searching online.

So how can you spot a 360° image during your search? Let me walk you through some things to look out for.

1. The image is distorted
\n
The most obvious way to tell if an image is a 360° image is if the flat version of the 360° image looks distorted. For example, look at this image below.
\n
See how the bed and other other elements in the image are distorted? That’s because it’s a 360° image.
\n
\n
2. The image has a 2:1 aspect ratio
\n
If the image is twice as wide as it is tall—or has a 2:1 aspect ratio—it’s likely a 360° image.
\n

3. Upload it to Storyline 360
\n
To double-check if it’s a true 360° image, insert it into Storyline 360 to see how it displays. If it really is a 360° image, it won’t look distorted and will render correctly, as shown below.

Creating your own 360° images?

It can be challenging to find images that relate to your content. And if your course content requires learners to be immersed in a specific environment, custom images are your best bet. In that case, the easiest way to get the exact image you need is to create your own!

Some phones, such as the Pixel, have a built-in feature that allows you to capture your own 360° images. But not all phones have this feature. For example, an iPhone camera with panoramic mode enabled captures 240° cylindrical panoramas. And although you can still add 240° images into Storyline 360, they won’t render correctly, as seen in this example.

If your phone doesn’t include a built-in feature that allows you to take 360° equirectangular images, no need to worry! There are a growing number of 360° camera apps you can download to create your own. Any captured images will first appear as a distorted flat portrait, but you can use Photoshop or another photo-editing app to edit them for the best quality experience. None of the 360 images load. I tried Chrome and Edge. I tried posting a file to Review 360 and viewing courses others made with 360 images, and it's just a blank slide. Is this a comment error?

Hi Cathy, we aren't aware of any issues with viewing 360° images after publishing to Review. Are you able to share the Review link so I can check on my end? Or share the 360° image being used or the .story file so I can investigate to see if there's an issue with the image itself?

I just used a sample I found in the Newsletter you guys sent out. I republished it to see if that would allow me to view it but it didn’t work. The 3D image always just appears blank.

I absolutely love this feature and have already started to built a virtual tour of our offices for visiting staff and new employees as part of their induction. If your office is a large space you can use triggers to navigate to other slides and not just be \"stuck\" with the markers or hotspots.
Next project is to use a 360 image to act as a navigation portal for learners e.g. click the screen to see how to send an email, click the printer to see how to print etc.
Great feature overall. I'd recommend watching multiple videos on how to take 360 pictures effectively (the one with a broom handle is the method I used) 😀

I tried this feature, but when I use a panoramic photo taken from my mobile phone, the 360 image get distorted.
The camera is using Samsung Note 9, set to 3:4 photo. Storyline prompted a message saying \"This image might not render correctly. For the best result, use a 360 panoramic image with 2:1 aspect ratio\".
How do I configure the 2:1 in the camera?

This is what I did plus I used the broomstick method to keep the phone in the same place, drop me a reply if this doesn't make sense.
Once you have this photo, I shared it with myself, I didn't publish to Google Earth as the office space is sensitive, but just saved it to my device and uploaded to Articulate.
I hope this helps you get the images you need.

Is anyone out there creating their own 360 images using a graphics package? Finding the exact right picture might be hard for what we want to do. If my graphic artist could produce the \"rooms\" we want to use it would be ideal.

I was very excited to use this feature and it blew away my clients, but when I published the course to the LMS all I got was a blank screen (using a 360 image) Tried everything, it just wouldn't work, so I had to remove it. It was fine on SCORM cloud and on the review site.
