Articulate Storyline 2 & Adobe Flash discontinuation

Jan 25, 2021

Hello Articulate Team,

I am using Articulate Storyline 2 for a company project. Since Adobe Flash has been discontinued (effective Dec. 31, 2020) , the preview option no longer works. Is there a way around this? How can I preview in-progress content?

Thank you,

Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,

With Adobe Flash being discontinued, there are certain elements of legacy apps such as Storyline 2 which will no longer work. As a result of Adobe's decision to end support for Flash, we also choose to end support for tools like Storyline 2 at the same time.  You can read more about this in our article on How the End of Flash Affects Articulate Tools and Apps.

You could look at publishing the course to Web and use that as a "preview" version, but depending on how often you preview, it may be an extra lift!

Ultimately, I recommend upgrading to Storyline 3 or Articulate 360 (which includes both Storyline 360 and Studio 360) as these apps don’t have any Flash dependencies and their HTML5 output works in all modern browsers. I'm happy to put you in touch with one of my colleagues to talk through upgrade options!

Hello Articulate team,

I am sorry for my sudden message to you. However, I have a question on "How the End of Flash Affects Articulate Tools and Apps" article.

Our contents published in Storyline 2 have not been worked in IE since Jan 12. They still works fine in Google Chrome.  We can start playing them via Edge Chromium, however, once we push temporal stop button, we cannot start again. Flash has already been removed from Our Edge Chromium v88, though.

I see following description on the article.

Note that HTML5 output from Storyline 1, Storyline 2, and Studio ‘13 works in Google Chrome and Safari. However, it won’t work reliably in other browsers.

There is no description on Edge Chromium, though, is Edge Chromium categorized as the same as Google Chrome? Can we consider that our FLASH/HTML contents work fine both Google Chrome and Edge Chromium?  Or if we would like to use our contents with Chromium Edge, do we need to republish our contents via Storyline3?

Hi Ryoko,

Edge Chromium is based on the same Chromium developed for Google Chrome, so I can understand the assumption that they'd work the same. The caveat though is that earlier Articulate apps weren't designed with Edge Chromium in mind, and therefore it's not supported. Some elements may work seamlessly, whereas other pieces don't, as you saw with your exit course behavior.

If you'd like to use Edge Chromium, I'd look at upgrading to Storyline 3 or Articulate 360 (which includes Storyline 360) to fully take advantage of support for additional browsers and the HTML5 output.

Hey, Sylvia!

Both Storyline 3 and Storyline 360 can easily upgrade your Storyline 2 projects. And between the two tools, Storyline 360 will always be the latest and most updated. We work to keep compatibility for opening projects between the two authoring apps as outlined here.

Hope that helps!

Hi there, Ryoko!

I'm sorry to hear you hit this roadblock after upgrading your courses.

Are you comfortable with sharing one of the files? It'll help me look into the behavior in Internet Explorer and Edge Chromium, and I'll delete it from my machine after.

Simply use this upload link to share the file privately with me.

Hi Ryoko,

I apologize if we've caused any confusion. I was re-reading what you've shared here and it looks like you are only experiencing an issue with the Storyline 2 output, but not Storyline 3. Is that correct?

If so, based on the information Ashley shared above regarding Edge Chromium, our recommendation would be to upgrade your content to Storyline 3 so that it works as expected.

Hi

I have been able to use Storyline 2 up until this week when a company wide system upgrade removed Flash reader from my system.   I had been using Storyline 2 for a large project to convert some very old content (S1) to Storyline 2 in order to then on convert it to Storyline 360 to prepare them for content updates.  The reason for doing this is that each course contains a multitude of superscript formatting for reference numbering.   If I convert directly to S360 the superscript formatting is removed and any reformatting has to be done manually (I am talking hundreds of screens).  If I convert S1 courses to S2 first, it maintains the superscripting for the on-conversion to S360.

I had managed to do over 70 courses but have at least another 50 to do.

Can you advise if there is any workaround to open S2 without the flash option (I currently get a message to download Flash).

Any advice you can provide would be much appreciated.

With thanks Cath.

Hi Cath!

Thank you for providing these details! I know we can help. I've started a case on your behalf with our Support Engineers so that we can first see if you can use Storyline 2 even though it's no longer supported. Secondly, I want our team to take a look at why the subscript isn't rendering properly in Storyline 360.

You should've received an email with an upload link. If you're comfortable sharing your project with us, that would be helpful too!
