Complete course as complete/failed

Feb 03, 2021

Is it possible to complete a course in LMS (Scorm 1.2) where the user did not pass the test? At the moment I can only select complete/passed and Incomplete/Failed. I would love to have an option for Complete/failed. The reason I want something like that is that I have 6 separate modules (they need to follow this in a sequence) with a test at the end and the student don't need to pass this (still they get to notice that they did not pass the 90%). To close the module I can not use the exit course as this one does not send the complete trigger to LMS and I can not go to the next module. So I need to use the complete course trigger but can't say that they passed if they did not. When they have done all the modules they can do a separate module with an assessment, this one they need to pass. If not I still want to give them the option to complete but without the credits. Hope everything is clear what I want

Hi Willem,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you would like to see in your project.

When you publish a Storyline or Studio course for SCORM or AICC, you get to choose one of these reporting options:

    • Passed/Incomplete
    • Passed/Failed
    • Completed/Incomplete
    • Completed/Failed

You mentioned that Complete/Failed is what you would like to see. Are you not seeing this option?

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for your reaction but that is not what I am asking. There are questions Question 1: I want Articulate to react when doing the normal modules (incl. a knowledge check) and not passing the test. Complete course as "complete/failed" in this way I can use the Tracking in the publish to LMS When the learner completes a quiz "final assessment"

For the final assessment we allow the learners to do this 2 times, if they do not pass the second time then I again need a trigger what is saying: "complete/failed" (after reset the results), What we want to do is that the learner need to do all the (separate) modules again. We still need to find a way in our LMS.

Hope this is a little bit more clear, I am really struggling how a LMS is reacting when I send the various triggers.

I am also struggling about all the various triggers, is there somewhere a document what descript all the various triggers in Articulate with a clear explanation when you can use them and what they are doing?

Hello Willem!

I'm happy to help! I want to start by sharing which quiz data is sent to an LMS from Storyline 360. Here's the full list.

We don't offer a trigger to change the complete/failed status after resetting the results. This would be something I'd recommend reaching out to your LMS team about. You might even consider using Javascript to achieve this.

Lastly, this article covers everything you need to know about triggers! Let us know if we can help with anything else!

What is the difference between Passed/Failed and Completed/Failed? We have a series of quizzes that were published using Passed/Failed and the LMS only allowed 1 attempt.  Our new LMS (Workday) doesn't have an attempt setting. Recently, someone was able to retake a quiz more than once even though there was no retake button and it was published as Passed/Failed. I am confused as to why this would happen and I don't want to republish the series of 12 quizzes if it is unnecessary.

Hi Kari!

It sounds like you were looking for more information about the differences between Passed/Failed and Completed/Failed statuses that get reported to an LMS. I'd be happy to elaborate on that for you!

Many LMSs track both a completion status and a success status. To report both statuses, choose either Passed/Incomplete or Passed/Failed when publishing Storyline content. Completed/Incomplete and Completed/Failed report only the completion status.

Also, I had some follow-up questions regarding your learner who was able to retake a quiz more than once:

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Steven,

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Lots going on and thankfully these are quizzes are only assigned a couple times a month. The quiz was set to Never resume.  I have since republished with the setting Completed/Failed and also tried Passed/Failed with Always Resume.  It was close, but still didn't work.  If you try and retake the quiz immediately, it takes you to the results slide which is what I was hoping, but if you back out and look for the course again and select retake lesson, it lets you retake the quiz.  I am guessing this problem may be LMS specific and Workday Learning is still somewhat new to us so perhaps there actually a way to limit it so that it can't be retaken that we do not know of.  We were told this is not possible?? It seems odd to me that we are the only organization that has this issue.  I'd explain the circumstances more, but that is for another day.

Hi Kari!

No worries, glad you could reach out when you were available! Hope all is well in your neck of the woods! ✨

It sounds like something that is specific to your LMS. I'd double-check with your LMS provider to confirm what is allowed within their settings and your setup.

I'm curious if others that use Workday Learning have experienced this before. I'll open this up to the community to chime in and share their thoughts!

If any other questions come up, we're here to help!

Have a wonderful weekend!
