You can achieve this using a variable trigger on your slide. Unfortunately, you'll need to do this on every slide where the captions appear. The good news is that once you create the trigger for one slide then it's a simple copy/paste job to the others. This forces the captions to turn on automatically at the beginning of each slide.
I've included a screenshot of the trigger we use for this.
Thanks for the tip. I have many storyline outputs already published and wondering if there is a way to edit an XML or similar file in the output to turn on the Player.DisplayCaptions to true. Is it possible?
We want your published file to work smoothly in all supported browsers, so we don't support modifying the published output. Other folks in the community may have discovered a workaround to share with you here!

You should be able to add the trigger once on the master slide , which would then take effect on all slides.
That's an excellent suggestion Michael - I haven't tried that before!
Thank you Aidan Simpson and Michael Hinze. That did the trick!
I love forums! Thanks for sharing :)
You could also change the default value of Player.DisplayCaptions to True.
I just noticed that changing the default to True only works for HTML5 output. It doesn't seem to work for Flash.
So simple :) - I hadnt noticed the default value option. Thanks
Just stumbled on this handy hint as I was looking for a method of doing just this - thanks so much to all for sharing!

Great idea! Where do you find the default value of the player?
The default value can be changed in the Variables screen.
That's an easy way to handle it, Russell. Thanks for sharing :)
I just wanted to share some documentation on variables in case anyone following along needed some additional information on the topic.

How do you load a Storyline video from your c-drive into Storyline 360 so you can work on it?
