Drag and Drop - Drag Item Won't Move

Aug 06, 2020

I am building a file that has a drag and drop interaction at the beginning of each scene. My first scene works as expected, but on my second scene the item that is supposed to be dragged won't move. It works if I am previewing only that slide or that scene, but if I preview the whole file, the error occurs. The cursor appears as though the item can be interacted with, but it just won't move. I have tried ungrouping and regrouping the object, replacing the drag item with different objects (including singular ungrouped objects), deleting the trigger, deleting and replacing the slide, copying the slides into a new file, renaming the objects, moving the item around the screen, trying to add drop interactions to other slides in the file (with same result), exporting it to Review360, updating Storyline and restarting my computer, and I can't seem to get the error to go away.

The file is attached, any help would be appreciated.

In addition, the file seems to run laggy and slow in my Storyline360. My computer specs should be able to handle it, I'm wondering if it has to do with the fact that I'm using all of my objects from the Articulate library? I'm new at this and still learning best practices for how to keep the files running smoothly. The file is only 10kb. Is it laggy for other users as well?

Hello everyone!

I have great news to share! We are no longer seeing this bug where multiple Drag and Drop or Drag Over triggers cause succeeding drag instances to be unmovable when using our latest version of Storyline 360 (Build 3.72.29699.0).

Please let us know if you’re still noticing the issue, and we’ll be happy to continue troubleshooting with you in a support case.

Hi Kristen,

Thanks for contacting us and sharing what you are experiencing with your project and for sharing the .story file.

I looked through all the slides in your file and did not see any drag and drop interactions.

Did you build these in a different way? Can you point me to the specific slide number that you're having difficulty with as well as the object that is not working as intended?

I'd be happy to take another look.

Kristen Cooper

Hi Leslie, thanks for the response! The slides I'm referring to are 2.1 and 3.1. They are not traditional freeform drag and drop interactions with a feedback slide, but the user drags an item to advance to the next slide. As you can see 2.1 functions while 3.1 does not. I attempted converting the slides to freeform and disabled the feedback layer trigger, but still rendered the same result.

Hi Leslie, were you previewing the entire project when working with slide 3.1 or just that slide/scene? Because for me the issue occurs only when I try and preview the whole project or export it. The issue is that the item won't move at all, not that it won't advance the slide.

Here's a screencast of what I'm experiencing: https://360.articulate.com/review/content/5fb9f845-fbc4-4676-ab7e-f9f0e42802bc/review

Kristen,

I can help you a little bit. I can tell you what to do to make it work, but not why.

1. On slide 3.1, If you move the COVID group up until its whole bounding area is inside the slide, it will work.

OR 2. On slide 2.2, Set rectangle 5 invisible at the beginning. Then go through the project like normal, and on slide 2.2 don't click the Next group until after you have clicked each of the healthy supplies, and it will work.

OR On slide 3.1, turn the sun picture invisible, and it will work.

I don't pretend to know why, but #1 and #2 seem to involve one or both of those two groups (Next and COVID). It reinforces my deep-seated animosity against groups, and strengthens my opinion that they don't play nicely with any other SL object.

#3 (along with some of your troubleshooting steps) may indicate that there is some corruption someplace.

Yes, it doesn't seem to run as crisply as I would expect, which also argues for slight corruption.

Hi Walt,

I appreciate you taking the time to try and help me solve my problem. I attempted all of your solutions and was still unable to get slide 3.1 to function as expected.

I spent the afternoon rebuilding the file from scratch and re-creating my grouped items in illustrator so as to avoid the user having to interact with any grouped objects, and I am still running into the same issue. At this point I will be nixing the interaction altogether, but I'm disappointed that such a simple interaction could not be accomplished in Storyline and that a file could be so easily corrupted by using only items built into the program's own library.

Hi, Nicole, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! ✨

It doesn't look like Kristen opened a case with our support engineers, so I couldn't see if the issue was file corruption.

I'd love to help to get your interaction to work. Would you be able to share your .story file either publicly here or privately through a support case?

Hi Nate,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing that you're experiencing this issue as well.

I'm curious if you have multiple drag and drops in your course using drag over triggers? We do have an open issue reported to our team specific to this.

  • If so, the recommendation is to use Drop On instead of Drag Over in the meantime.
  • If not, I want to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening with your permission. You can share it publicly here or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Found out the issue only affects drag items on subsequent slides (not layers) if using "jump to next slide when ___dragged over ____"   Resolved the issue by condensing slides into layers and then using a "click" to advance to the next slide instead of dragging.   Hoping this gets resolved soon.

Hi Stephanie, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! ⭐️

I'm sorry you're hitting a similar snag. If possible, I'd love it if you could work 1:1 with a support engineer so they help determine what's causing the object to remain unmovable after using a Drop On trigger.

Feel free to share your file here, and one of my teammates will reach out with the next step.
