Essay question character limit not working?

I'm trying to create a simple note-taking system in SL 360 that allows the user to enter notes in one location, then access the notes later (via lightbox). I'm using the Essay Question input because it has a built-in character limit option. However, the character limit is ignored when entering the text, and when displaying the value of the variable later. The character limit doesn't seem to be limiting text input at the point of entry, or truncating the user's input after the fact in any way.
What does the character limit actually do? How does it work? What am I missing?
Thanks.
