Question about States

Aug 30, 2022

How many states can an object reasonably handle? I have some objects with 36 states and Storyline is really choking on that. Everything on the slide has gone super slow now, not only editing the slides, but also working on the triggers. I assume that's all due to there being too many states on this one object, which begs my question: how many is the limit, give or take?

This is essentially what i did, minus the button set part. With EDI in mind, i ended up with 18 choices of characters and i needed two states for each of them for what i had in mind. https://community.articulate.com/articles/allow-learners-to-choose-an-avatar-using-one-variable-with-storyline-360

Thank you for the offer. Right now the project is in a bit of a rough shape and i'm not sure it makes a lot of sense to someone at the moment.

But i was just asking in general and it sounds like 36 states is nothing too cumbersome for Storyline, so that's not it. :)

Ok... it's getting worse, so i am going to share my story file here. It's a bit of a mess as not everything is linked up yet. But I'm working on the slide "Scenario Gi05 - Family Advocate" and on the character called Abby (she's only in the layers, not the base layer), i need to add 18 states, each with a different character, same pose, same expression, etc. It is slow as molasses. I click and wait at least 10-15 seconds, sometimes longer, for something to happen. It's painful. It also crashes as i do this, so yeah.

I had originally done 36 states, but thought maybe its' too much for the editor to handle, so i found a way to reduce it to 18, but still it is like this. Perhaps you can take a look and help.

Hello,

I tested your file and I'm not getting any or very minimal slowdown at all. When editing the triggers, it might take 5 seconds for the trigger wizard to appear. But, I wouldn't say that behavior is alarming. The only thing I can think of is it might be an issue with your computer. Maybe it's an old machine or slower processor speed?

I wish I had a better answer for you.

With that being said, I think your project is pretty cool. I haven't seen anything like this before.

It could be... for me, when i edit the states, i click on something and then it sometimes takes upward of 30 seconds before the object becomes active, even if it's just the dropdown menu or going from one state to another to edit the next one. I'd take a 5 second delay at this point! :P

And thank you, that made my day! :D I am building a clinic simulation where you - the clinic manager - are trying to solve a scheduling problem but in the context of a leadership framework that we are trying for our leadership to embrace. So as you go through the options for each scenario, not only do those counters that you saw at the top - staff burnout, patient wait, patient satisfaction - get affected, but in the background there is, borrowed from D&D and other RPGs, a skill tree that is broken down into the components of the leadership framework that is affected as well and for which you get feedback at the end of the game. :)

Hello,

If it is taking Storyline 360 30 or more seconds to become responsive, I'd say that the application isn't working properly in that case. If you're already working locally when making edits to your project, try doing a repair of your Storyline 360 installation to see if this helps.

If the issue persists, feel free to reach out to our support team by opening a case so we can take a closer look at what's happening.
