Requesting advice on the use of the slider

Aug 13, 2021

Thank you for taking the time to read and provide advice to the following question.  I have created an interaction using the slider that advances several layers.  My question is, how do I prevent the learner from moving the slide bar all the way to the end in one 'swipe'.  If the learner holds the mouse button down it seems as though they can advance the slider to any degree in either direction.  Once they release the mouse button, I have utilized a hotspot to prevent movement of the slider during media play.

Again, is there a trick or feature that prevents the slider from being advanced from start to finish in one movement?

Thanks,

Joe

The short answer is yes, if you want to invest the necessary resources. A better answer is that maybe a different design could be quicker and more elegant. Sliders seem to work best when you want to give the learner the option to jump to any part. Restricting choices to fewer, or just one option, may be better done using some other method of choice. If you want to attach your .story file here, you may get some good ideas.

If not, you can always create invisible (filled, but transparency set to 98%) shapes that cover portions of the slider. When the cursor moves over the shape, it loses contact with the thumb, and drops it. Then you set that shape to hidden, and the next move attempt can move one step farther to the next shape.

Well, I attempted the invisible field (shape at 98% transparency) and covered a portion of the slider.  Unfortunately the cursor did not lose contact with the thumb.  I also attempted to overlay a hotspot to see if that would work, but no success.  Overall, this will probably be easier to just swap out for something like triggered icons.

Thanks again!
