Storyline crashes multiple times a day

Jul 23, 2021

Hello,

For no apparent reason Storyline VERY OFTEN crashes, out of the blue, especially when I use the space bar to stop playback. The app just disappears from the screen, and I have to restart the program multiple times an hour. As you may imagine, this is a severe hampering to the effectiveness of my work. I can't tell you how annoying this is.

I use a beefed up computer with a great graphics card, plus more than enough processor power and ram. I always update SL360 when an update is available, and my IT department assures that the computer always runs with the latest security updates.

While it seems to me that you always have a creative fluffy solution to many problems, I personally think Storyline severely suffers from some basic bugs. I would suggest that you put more effort into resolving these.

Is it somehow possible to get in touch with some technically skilled support people? This cannot go on.

Best regards,

Bent

I appreciate you sharing that the latest version has alleviated the issue for you, Bent.

For anyone following along: Yesterday, we released a fix for a couple of issues in the latest version, Build 3.54.25674.0. It sounds like this may be applicable:

Fixed: Pressing the spacebar in slide view or using the timeline preview could prompt you to save your project file or cause Storyline 360 to close unexpectedly.

Hello again Leslie, I don't know if you read this but if you do I just want to share a final point of view of this topic.

Ever since I began working with SL back in 2014, stability has been an issue. This is what I meant with the "basic bugs" statement in my original post. Crashes have been an annoying side of SL1, 2, 3 and now 360, but with this fix I experience almost a new everyday with regards to creating courses.

  1. I haven't had a single crash since updating the build version. Overall stability of SL360 has so far been excellent for me.
  2. Bonus (for me): I am an avid user of keyboard shortcuts, as they drastically increase the speed with which I can deliver. With the updated build the start/stop of the timeline using the space bar now responds faster (in slide view), and of course without interruptions. I still think it is a bit slow, but I can live with this improvement.

One thing I do miss though, is a display that shows me the exact time. The bar over the timeline just doesn't cut it for me. I would like to be able to see minutes, seconds - and frames, and to navigate easily to a point on the timeline using a shortcut!

Let me thank you again for taking my rather irritated post seriously. I now work on a stable platform, which I think is about the first time for me in Storyline.

Regards,

Bent

Leslie, please see the attachment.

Yes, for us end-users.

I have put together a small graphics showing what I would like to see in Storyline: A display of hours, minutes, seconds and frames. Hours may not be necessary ;-) but minutes, seconds and frames would be nice to see somewhere on the timeline. Why not where I put it?

If clickable one could double click the display, and enter for example "+ 7 ." (the plus sign, then the time (seven seconds in my example), then the period sign, then finish with the enter key) ... and you would be taken to that time code to do whatever editing necessary there.

I navigate back and forth on the timeline all the time, and the options for doing that without click click click click more clicking are pretty scarce in SL360. Yes, I know I can use the arrow keys, as well as Ctrl + arrow keys to go back and forth. That helps, but for an application of SL360's kind I for one would like to see more of those what I call absolutely basic options for any video editor, be it linear or non-linear.

Alright, have a nice weekend. We're getting close in this time zone :-).

Hi Brent and Matthew,

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 66, we’ve included important fixes and new features.

One of the features we’ve included is:

Scrub the timeline to quickly see when timed elements appear and disappear on the stage without previewing the entire slide.

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you need additional help!
