Storyline randomly changing text boxes to remove word wrap

Nov 16, 2016

Hi there

I'm having an issue where Storyline is changing the size of text boxes.

For example, a text box which is two lines long is changed so that it has no wrapping, and extends off the page.

This is happening without warning, so that I go through a round of testing and the error appears after the test.

Is there any user error (short of manually editing the textbox) which could be causing this?

I am not editing the text boxes to create this error. I am working locally also.

Any experience with this issue appreciated.

Thanks

Luke

Hey Luke!

Thanks for reaching out here about this. Are you seeing this happen when previewing right in Storyline 2 or just once published? If it's happening only when viewing the published output, what environment are you publishing for and where are you viewing the published output from? Would you be able share your .story project file here so I can take a closer look? You can add it as an attachment right to a comment in this thread, or if you'd prefer you can share it privately with our Support Engineers by way of this form. Thanks! :)

Hello! I am having this same issue with SL360. I have no idea why this keeps happening, but I am noticing this happening in a number of scenarios:

When adding slides from the Team Slides (even when I have re-saved and know that it is correct when I save it)

After publishing to Review 360, and closing the file...the next time it was opened, the text boxes spread beyond the page

This has also happened on question slides too.

We use standard fonts: Arial, standard size - either 4:3 or 16:9. The courses where I have seen this most are 4:3.

Any ideas?

Greetings, Lisa. Appreciate you sharing your experience and setup with us!

I'm seeing the text box going off the slide, but I'm not finding anything in your settings that would cause that to happen. Sorry for the trouble!

I'd like to have our Support Engineers weigh-in and created a case on your behalf. Someone from the team will be in touch shortly, and I'll follow along!

Just chiming in after 2 years. This still seems to be happening, and has been happening with my current project(s) increasingly. Not sure what is causing it. I HAVE been copying and pasting a file. So, that could have something to do with it, but I've been doing this for a while without problems. It only just started happening. though, I notice, any slide that I created, apart from the slides I imported, are not affected usually. Just the imported slides.

Hi Noah! I'm sorry for the issues you are experiencing.

I have a few follow-up questions to assist in troubleshooting:

  • Can you specify what issue you are experiencing? For example, are your text boxes running off the page, or something else?
  • Are you working on your local C: drive when these issues occur?
  • You mention both copy/paste and importing slides, so can you clarify the process that causes an issue, or is it both?
  • Can you share your .story file publicly or privately here to see how it's behaving?

I look forward to hearing from you, Noah!

Hi Dillon! I'm sorry for the issues you are experiencing with text wrap.

Can you tell me what specific Storyline version you are on? We made changes in update 55 (Build 3.55.25954.0) for Text Autofit Improvements. What you are experiencing could be a result of this update.

Also, would you be willing to share your .story file with us publicly here or privately in a case? We will delete it from our system when troubleshooting is complete.

Andrea, thanks for reaching out. I'm unable to share the client's file, but from what I recall, it was doing it on some slides and not others. Every time I would open the file, BOOM, the text boxes on the slide (these are text boxes set in the master slide) would magically be reformatted to where they were extended off of the slide.

Again, I was thinking maybe this was due to the PPT slides we imported. I think when you import PPT slides, they create their own master slides. So, maybe the text boxes on these are getting messed up.

But the problem is even after reformatting and saving, you can come back to the file later on, and they've done it again!

Hello Noah!

I can see how frustrating this must be, so I appreciate you including more details! Do those text boxes match any of the formatting on the Master Slide? If so, is it possible for you to apply a different layout to those slides to reformat the text boxes?

If you can share a screen recording of the steps you've taken, I'd be happy to see if I can recreate the issue on my end.

In my experience, it usually happens if the text box shape was originally linked to a text box on a master slide.

If that master Slide text box gets deleted (for whatever reason) then it appears the shape/text box on the slide has nothing to refer back to so it defaults to a single line, no-wrap box.

Placing a text box on the master slide and then re-linking the slide in question back to that master layout slide (and possibly having to copy and paste the content from the errant text box into the new text box) usually solves the issue.
