Weird behavior with quiz, submit button, and unexpected next/previous buttons

Sep 18, 2018

Lately, my clients have been submitting tickets about functional issues they are encountering within the courses I have created for them. After lots of research and digging, I've been able to recreate the issues exactly with Chrome and Edge in Windows (I realize Edge is not meant to be compatible with Storyline 2, but I wanted to test it against Chrome). I am 100% unable to recreate the issues in Chrome and Firefox on Mac. My assumption is that the issues are related to HTML5 incompatibilities with SL2, since if I republish without HTML5 (in Flash), the issues disappear (but we don't want to publish in Flash).

Today, we received a report of an issue within a quiz. If the user clicks the "Submit" button without having selected a response, the typical warning message pops on screen ("you must completed the question before submitting") with an "OK" button. When the "OK" button is clicked, the Submit button on the bottom right of the slide disappears and the "PREV" and "NEXT" buttons appear as if we have moved into review mode. The PREV button allows me to go back to previously answered questions and see the submitted response, but the NEXT button is dead. Once the SUBMIT button disappears, there is no way to re-enter and resume the quiz. This is a timed quiz with about 100 questions, so you can imagine how inconvenient it is for users to have to reload and restart the quiz, losing all of their progress.

Here's a low-resolution screen grab (some parts have been redacted). Notice what happens at :31.

Note that I have all slides set to show only the SUBMIT button, and to hide PREV/NEXT. And also note that this issue does not present in Chrome or Firefox in Mac. I can only replicate it inside Windows on Chrome or Edge.

I'm at my wit's end. Not sure how to resolve this, and the client is growing more frustrated. I'm not yet a SL360 user, but wondering how it might work out if I tried to import this .story file into 360 and publish it from there (though I would prefer to make it work from SL2).

Thanks.

Hi D,

Thanks for the video, that was really helpful to follow along with how a learner is interacting with your content.

Can you check what update of Storyline 2 those courses were published with? I wanted to see if it's the latest update (Update 13) as I know the last few updates included a number of fixes specific to HTML5 output.  You can check by going to the "Help" Tab -> "About Articulate Storyline".

I couldn't find a similar report, so if you're still running into this after confirming you're on the latest update, I'd want to test out a copy of your project. If you can't share it here publicly, you can always send to our Support Team here and they'll be happy to sign an NDA if needed.

Hi Ruth,

Sorry to hear that you ran into a similar issue. Would you be able to upload a copy of your project file so I can try to reproduce the behavior on my end? It would help me get a better understanding of what's happening if I could see how your question slides are configured. If you prefer to share your project file privately, you can always reach out to our support team here for assistance.

I understand that the details shared in this thread are for a Storyline version that is no longer support, but as mentioned by my colleague, its important to make sure that you are testing the behavior in the latest version of Storyline 360 to make sure that this isn't an issue that was addressed in a recent release. If you are not running the latest version of Storyline 360, try updating to the latest version and check to see if this helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
