Weird superficial anomaly with top tab/player links appearance in Modern player of SCORM 1.2 course with sidebar collapsed by default

Sep 17, 2021

Issue: The appearance of the player links or "top tabs," (3 in this case) added to the upper right of the Modern player on SCORM 1.2 published courses gets “stuck” in a condensed (...) or responsive state ONLY when the browser window is sized down then auto-maximized to full screen.  These links/top tabs don't immediately return to their original state.

For mobile responsiveness, it is normal for these "top tabs" (as Articulate refers to the player links) to appear as three dots when the browser window is small, or when viewing the course on a mobile device. But they seem to be getting stuck that way only when I manually resize the window smaller, and then select the window's auto maximize button in the upper right of the window to automatically make the window fill the screen.

(Please note we have no choice at this point but to use SCORM 1.2.)

**ETA UPDATE: I think I've narrowed down where this is happening (but no clue "why" it's happening). The issue seems to be centered on the state of the Sidebar (collapsed vs non) and SCORM 1.2.

Specifically the issue shows up when these three things are in play:

  • In player settings, select Storyline's SIDEBAR COLLAPSED setting which hides the menu/sidebar by default on launch;
  • Publish course using SCORM 1.2;
  • Then when viewing the course in a browser (on an LMS or SCORM cloud),  manually resize the window smaller (to trigger the 'responsive' state of everything in the UI) and then use Windows automatic 'Maximize' window.

I don't see any way within Storyline to globally fix this. So if someone knows of a tweak we can apply in the LMS to control this odd quirk, please let me know.

Fortunately, this anomaly is not a show-stopper since the functionality of the temporarily hidden 2 links still works from the drop down menu in which they're buried when this happens; but shouldn't the player links in the UI return to their original appearance when automatically maximizing the browser window?

------------original post below---------------

I'm using SL 360, build v3.55.25975.0 to build and pub SCORM 1.2 courses.

The appearance of player links we add to the Modern player (to appear in the upper right of the UI) in a published course changes appearance --the display of these 3 links seems to get stuck in a collapsed, responsive state when resizing and then auto-maximizing the browser window.

The appearance of the player links goes from (for example):

"Resources    Help    Exit"

   to

"Resources ..."

after I manually resize the browser window smaller, and then click the automatic MAXIMIZE window button to enlarge the window to full screen.

Fortunately this quirk seems to be temporary as the appearance of the 3 upper right player links returns to normal as soon as I click the burger icon to view the MENU, or manually resize the window up AND down.

So the question is: Why do the upper right player links remain "collapsed" (...) after auto-maximizing the window? I'd expect this responsive-ish behavior when viewing the course in a smaller screen format like mobile etc, but not when a viewing a regular maxxed window.

I have attached 4 screen caps to hopefully better demonstrate this quirk I'm seeing:

Capture  1 - Shows my sample SCORM 1.2 pubbed course (a simple 4-slide file, opens with menu collapsed) as it appears when 1st launched. If you look at the 3 links in the upper right of the player, they appear as intended.

To test things out, I then manually resized this browser window (by grabbing the edge of the window with mouse, click and drag smaller) to see how responsive the UI would be at a smaller size....

Capture 2 - Shows the course browser window after I resized it down to a  smaller size --> to demonstrate how the interface/player links disappear as expected in the responsive player. However -- when I click the automatic maximize window button (highlighted in Capture 2) to automatically maximize the window to full screen....

Capture 3 -  The now maximized course browser window displays the 3 upper right links in a weird, collapsed "Resources . . ." config, with only one of the three links (Resources) showing, and the other two links now buried in a clickable, 3-dot drop-menu.

I then wanted to see if these links would stay in this collapsed configuration. So I clicked the MENU hamburger icon to open the Menu....

Capture 4 - The menu appeared AND the 3 links in the upper right returned to their orig appearance, all on screen, no 3 dots with drop down.

I've already tried the following troubleshooting steps with no success:

- Shortened the course title in the Player settings

- Changed player font size % - shrunk it from 100 to 85 with no effect. (I thought the title length was the original culprit, but this quirk is happening  with any course I view)

- All files are local - no network.

- Created and test-viewed a simple, empty one slide SCORM pub with these links added

- Created and test-viewed a new course with same links added, but changed screen size

- Viewed courses in different browsers (Chrome and Edge - no difference)

- Viewed several different Storyline-built SCORM files, including several I did not author

- Updated/repaired my copy of Storyline 360 (since I am the common denominator, must check that too. :p)

= zero difference. (See *ETA UPDATE* at the top of this msg)

Thanks for any help.

Wow Kathy, I appreciate you taking the time to troubleshoot, document, and clearly describe what you're seeing!

I'm looking forward to seeing what other folks in the community have to say about their experiences. Meantime, I'd like our support engineers to review these details and provide insight. I've submitted a case on your behalf, and we will reach out soon via email!

Hello Kathy!

I wanted to follow up and share that we aren't seeing this bug, Collapsed Topbar tabs in Modern Player do not return to original state after maximizing browser window, in our latest version of Storyline 360.

I'd recommend using Storyline 360 (Build 3.61.27106.0) or later.

If you need to reach our Support Team, we are available in this discussion or in a support case.

Hi Guys,

Just wanting to trouble-shoot a semi-related issue. I'm able to launch scorm 1.2 course into new window, but wanted to know if there was a way of making it more seamless. As of today 29/7/2022 I have the latest update, am uploading in scorm package 1.2 into Moodle.

From clicking the enter button to launch the player, I momentarily see the player in smaller view with Moodle created side File title to left of player then it launches into new window about 1-1.5 seconds later (in full screen as intended).

Thanks in advance for your assistance:)

Steve.

Hi Stephen,

I'd recommend first testing the behavior in another LMS so we can isolate if the issue is LMS specific or course related. Here's a helpful guide on how you can test your issue in SCORM Cloud, which is an industry-standard testing engine:

If you are able to replicate the behavior in SCORM Cloud, reach out to our support engineers here so we can take a closer look at your course settings.

Let us know how it goes!
