Looking for a Portal/Intranet Solution

Jul 25, 2013

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a portal/intranet site? We have a large number (bring on 30 new reps a day) of outside, commission based sales reps. We will be sending them all to our new storyline course we have created but also need an area for them to view important documents, see their sales managers, view their earnings (which we will pull in via API from backend), etc. Looking for something highly customizable and user friendly. If anyone has any favorite solutions for this I would love to hear them.

Thanks from a new user (so be nice!)

Hi there Scott! Welcome to the community and thank you for posting!

I was poking around online to try to help answer this question for you, and I found this wikipedia page: Intranet portals. There's an interesting list of notable software tools, including a bunch that are free/open-source.Also, there's a lot of paid options, some of which are probably highly customizable, like you are looking for!

I know I've seen a lot of community discussions here in the forum about using Sharepoint, so this might be an option you may want to investigate a bit further, Hopefully some other community members may chime in with their own personal experiences. For now, hope the list helps as a starting point! =) Thanks!!

You might want to look at BuddyPress with BuddyPress Docs; they're WordPress plugins and work with each other (Docs is a plugin on a plugin).

You'd also need a membership solution (there are many, I like s2Member) to restrict access. The only tricky part would be pulling in the external data; best bet might be to hire a WordPress developer to write a custom plugin for this.

WordPress has evolved into a full-blown CMS; it's not just for bloggers any more.

My company uses Robohelp (MadcapFlare is an alternative) to create a web help portal. Here we organize all of our knowledge base documents and provide links to our CBTs.

If you need to track if someone has taken a course and looking for low cost options, moodle is a free open source LMS. (You'll need the ability to create a database too)

Another option would be to create a portal using wordpress (requires a database).  It would be easy for a non techy to create new documents, pages, and links to CBTs.

You might want to reread the OP's requirements -- he wasn't asking about an LMS solution, and I can't see how Moodle is the appropriate tool for developing a sales rep portal. That's like using a screwdriver to hammer a nail, IMHO.
