I was poking around online to try to help answer this question for you, and I found this wikipedia page: Intranet portals. There's an interesting list of notable software tools, including a bunch that are free/open-source.Also, there's a lot of paid options, some of which are probably highly customizable, like you are looking for!
I know I've seen a lot of community discussions here in the forum about using Sharepoint, so this might be an option you may want to investigate a bit further, Hopefully some other community members may chime in with their own personal experiences.
