3D objects in Storyline

Hi Articulate Team,

Are there any plans to bring support for 3D objects (such as .obj files) into Storyline?

Essentially I'm referring to a 3D model viewer component function added to Storyline allowing for some basic manipulation of the 3D object itself such as rotate and move in X/Y/Z axis, exploded view, and part isolation. This would work wonders for so many learning projects and enhance the actual learning being achieved by the learner.

Whilst Storyline has an insert web object feature, this requires additional overhead of the resource itself already being suitably hosted online or in a folder that can be hosted online (i.e. it contains HTML like files - index.html, etc. which is effectively asking for it to be web-ready). This isn't always suitable or practical for every company and their respective IP assets/resources.

I have come across multiple threads asking for such a feature. Here's a few of them:

In one of the threads I came across, there was a reply from Katie Riggo who stated "We're working on the ability to add 360° media assets to your courses". However, later on in the thread this turned out to be referring only to 360-degree images despite the thread being filled with people asking and requesting for 3D object support in terms of 3D models and being able to manipulate them like they can in PowerPoint.

You can chalk this up as another +1 to the feature request for native 3D object support by way of being able to import and, to a basic level, manipulate them.

Kind regards,

Sam

  • Hi SamBarnard-98a4!

Thanks for the feedback on the type of functionality you'd like to see in Storyline!

We are currently tracking a feature request for support of 3D objects in Storyline 360. I've included your voice in the request, so we can notify you if this enhancement makes it to our product roadmap.

Have a great rest of your week!

      Hi StevenBenassi

Thank you for the reply, and I really hope this is something that can be added to Storyline 360.

      Kind regards,

      Sam

Leaving another +1 for this feature request. Manipulating the objects that we're teaching about would give a lot of value to our learners!

StevenBenassihi Steven! I'd love to include support on this request as well. Is there somewhere we can see the request itself? I viewed the roadmap link but only saw general categories. Thank you!

    • Hi @CaitlinKovacevi!

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your support for 3D objects in Storyline!

This feature hasn't made it to our product roadmap yet, so you wouldn't see it listed there. Not to worry! I've included your voice in the request so we can notify you as soon as we have news to share!

  • Hi Steven/Articulate Staff,

Please also add my voice to this request. This would be very helpful for our team developing courses where 3d image manipulation in the published output would be very helpful for the end users. Similar to what Sam mentioned above, to be able to simply move the object on an X/Y/Z axis would give us much more engaging and interactive visual options. I'd like to be included on any future communications of this feature.

      Hello BruceRonk-638d1

Thanks for reaching out! I appreciate you sharing how 3D objects would impact you and your team. We do not have any updates to share at this time. I've gone ahead and shared your insight with our product team. We'll be sure to update this thread in the future with any news and updates so that all are in the loop!

      Have a great evening!

  • Thanks for the update and for sharing with the team. The GLTF format opens whole new doors for accessing and using 3D models in training. I like everything that PowerPoint is doing. A couple of improvements would be to include an HDRI lighting option so things reflect and are lighted correctly.  The Windows 3d viewer has this and it really improves the quality of the import. Transparency/glass is also not provided - but this may only be a knowledge deficiency on my part. Good luck with the development! - alan
