Accessible drag and drop - up to date example please

Hi there,

I am wanting to make an accessible drag and drop interaction, which I know will mean providing a drop down (or similar) matching exercise alternative. I am posting this to ask if folk can please provide links and inspiration for ways to provide accessible workarounds (with templates if possible).

Thank you

  • Good morning, Mhairi!

Because drag-and-drop interactions require a mouse for navigation, we don't recommend using them for courses that need to comply with Section 508 accessibility guidelines.

With that in mind, here are a few ideas:

    • Sally Wiedenbeck designed this custom template: Build an Accessible Drag and Drop Interaction in Storyline.
    • Rather than using matching drag-and-drop interaction, consider a matching drop-down interaction instead since it's keyboard-accessible.
    • Add a link that opens a layer with a text-based alternative for a freeform drag-and-drop interaction.
    • Let learners choose a slider alternative for a hotspot interaction since sliders respond to the arrow keys on your keyboard.

Can you describe/show in more detail what an accessible text-based alternative for a freeform drag and drop interaction looks like/means?

  • Hi, Linda.

Take a look at the E-Learning Challenge below:

You will find a few examples of a drag and drop activity re-design with accessibility in mind.

    I hope this helps!

  • Can you change a drag and drop matching question to a drop-down menu matching question in Rise alone, or do you need to use Storyline to do that?

      Hello Ben,

      Happy to chime in!

There isn't a way to convert a drag-and-drop matching question to a menu type question in Rise 360. The 'sequence drop-down' and 'matching drop-down' type questions are currently only available in Storyline 360. You'll need to design your questions in Storyline 360 and embed the project as a block if you want to use them in a Rise 360 course.
