Audio forward/backward on timeline?

I'm stuck with using previous/next with an audio file. I've successfully done this with video but for some reason with an audio-only file, the play pause is all that works via a toggle trigger. It almost appears as if the audio "doesn't know" it's part of the timeline because the previous/next buttons will not work to jump forward or backward on the timeline at all.
