base layer shows through even with "do not show" checked

Wondering what causes my base layer to show through on slides even if the box to not show objects on base layer? Anyone else experiencing this. It plays fine when previewed and published. It's just while working on the slides and it happens A LOT :(. It's getting wearisome :(. Thanks.

    Try this: 

     Remember, the properties setting controls only what is seen in preview and after publishing; the Lock/unlock visibility only controls what is seen during editing and connot hide the active layer.
