Sorry to hear that you ran into this issue.
The best way to pause the base layer using a slide layer is though the layer properties option 'Pause timeline of base layer'.
This automatically pauses the timeline layer of the base layer while the layer is active, and automatically resumes the base layer when the slide layer is closed.
Regarding your audio and closed caption issues, would you mind sharing a copy of your project file here so I can test it on my end? If you prefer to share your course in private, you can reach out to our support team here through a support case and share your file there.
Thanks for this response Joe! I've tried pausing base layer but found that it doesn't continue once I hide the layer.
As a heads up, there may be a lot of excessive triggers and variables since I've been trying to troubleshoot so please excuse the mess. Slides 1.2 and 1.3 are the slides I've been seeing the issue with (no other slides have the set up yet).
