Data Entry Input

I have been running into an issue when trying to have a large (paragraph) data entry input in Storyline 360.   The issue I have is that the formatting of the text entry does not stay with the text when the data entry variable is recalled later.  The formatting that doesn't stay is any paragraph returns.  Everything is just returned as one big text block.  Here are two screenshots to illustrate.  Any help would be appreciated!

  • Hi Ryan.  I can see how that behavior is not what you'd want!

Can you share some details with me so I can try to reproduce?  My carriage returns worked in the variable text on my test project in Storyline 360.  I noted the difference in behavior between a text box and a shape with text in it, especially for longer variable reference text.

    • Can you confirm what version of Storyline you’re using?  Go to Help > About Storyline.  The latest build is 3.15.15453.0.
    • Are you seeing this behavior in Preview, the output, or both?
    • Where do you test your published output (web, LMS, some other way)?

Thanks for working through it with me!

  • Hi there Ryan,

I appreciate you sharing your file with us. In your file, I noticed that the text entry field and the variable reference were on different slides.

After a bit of testing, I found that Storyline loses line breaks when the variable reference is on a different slide than the text entry field in the HTML5 output. Strange thing is, when the variable reference is on the same slide as the text entry field, everything works correctly. This screen recording explains it best.

We're going to keep looking into this behavior, and we'll keep you posted on any new information we uncover. Thanks so much for bringing this up to us, and I'm really sorry it's slowing you down!

  • Hi, Ryan.

I just wanted to share that we no longer see the bug reported where Text Entry loses line breaks when the reference box is on a different slide, using the latest build of Storyline (3.61.27106.0).

If you're using the latest version and you're still experiencing this issue, please reach out to our support team through a case
