Default Settings for Alt Text

I had to dig deep, but I found an article that says "By default, screen readers announce each object on the slide according to its name in the timeline panel."

Is this true? Do I have to manually deselect each Object is visible to accessibility tools box for every object on my slide if I don't want it to be read by a screen reader? Will the default object name be read by the screen reader if I do nothing?

  • Hi Emily,

Great questions! I understand you'd like some more information on the default settings of alt text. I'd be happy to get that for you!

The best way to hide items from being read by a screen reader is to delete them from the Focus Order window. You can remove each item individually or you can click the first item in the list, hold your shift key down, then click the last item in the list to select the whole list. Then click the remove button to remove the entire list of items.

Here's an article with more on alt text including using the Focus Order window.

    I hope this clarifies things!

  • Thanks John! That's very helpful. I am hoping for a bit more clarification since it is difficult to find this in the documentation. If I don't make any adjustments regarding hiding an object from a screen reader, will the screen reader automatically read the default object name for every object on my slide? If this is true, it should be emphasized in the documentation so that we understand it is our responsibility to fix this.

  • Hi Emily,

Thanks for following up! That is correct. If you don't make any adjustments regarding hiding an object from a screen reader, the screen reader will automatically read the default object name for every object on my slide.

Also, thanks for your thoughts on the documentation. I'll be sure to share them with our team.

    I hope this clarifies things!
